There is only one stop at Abeokuta. This is at Laderin train station. My trip was from Lagos to Abeokuta. Although, the train ride was smooth and very convenient. The train is always very cold from the Air conditioner. So, you will enjoy a chilled ride to your destination.

Tips to know before boarding Lagos to Ibadan train.

The train is quite new. So, the Air conditioner is working fine. So, to keep you warm, wear a cardigan or go with a blanket. Luckily for me, I sat by the window. So, all I had to do was to pull the curtains to allow in some of the heat of the sun.

You need to go with your food to board the train. The train doesn’t serve foods to the passengers irrespective of the class you board. I was so hungry on my trip because I didn’t eat breakfast. So, I would recommend you get what you want to eat for your trip. And if its the weekdays, you can eat before going to the train station.

Ensure you go with a means of Identification. This was requested at the ticketing booth before you can buy your train ticket. I would have missed my train if I didn’t pack my work ID card in my handbag. You can also watch my vlog below on other packing tips for road trip.

And of course, you need a nose mask. You cannot have access to the ticketing booth without a nose mask. However, if you do forget your nose mask, you can easily purchase one at the train station. Lagos to Ibadan train: Why you need to ride & important things to know

Travel is now open so we can start planning our vacations. However, in recent times, travel is now very expensive. So, travelers are looking for ways to get the cheapest flight booking deals out there. Is direct Vs 3rd party flight booking options, cheaper? There are so many tips on how to find the cheapest flight for travel. However, not all are applicable and tested. You can read my post on how to find the cheapest flight for your travel.

I love to search and compare plane tickets from different airlines to the gest the best deal. However, it will be quite stressful to hop from one airline website to another. So, to make this easy you can use an aggregator like Expedia or sky scanner. So, you can either book your flight ticket direct from the airline or through the 3rd party site. This post will aim to provide answer to the nagging question, “is it better to book flight tickets direct vs 3rd party sites”.

Direct vs 3rd party Flight tickets, which is better?

There is no hard and fast rule on which of these options is best. They both have their advantages and disadvantages. Below are the pros and cons along with all you need to know.

Direct Airline flight ticket booking

One of the ways you can book your flight ticket is through the airlines. Airlines offers various deals on their site for available flights. So, you can just go to the airline like air peace for example and book your plane ticket.

The flight fees on the airlines website is based on 3 major classes: Economy, business class and first class. The lowest class of flight is the economy. This also the cheapest flight ticket you can book for your travel. However, if you’re looking for class for your flight, you can opt for business class or first class plane ticket.

There are perks of booking directly from the airlines (Direct Vs 3rd party booking). Many travelers argue that in case of issues or emergency flight changes, airlines services are better. Some 3rd party agent or websites charge extra for the “inconvenience”. Below are the other perks of booking directly from Airlines.

Flight cancelation or reschedule

In recent times, the uncertainty around the pandemic may lead to flight cancellations or a need to reschedule your flights. It is easy to reschedule your flight directly from the airline. Can I cancel a flight booking direct from airlines? Yes sure. There are times you need to cancel or make changes to your booking. This you can easy do with the airlines.

Unlike if you compare direct vs 3rd party agents, you will need to 3rd party websites first. These agents will ask for extra charges or fee to make changes to your flight tickets. So, it is advisable to book flights directly from airlines for the ease of making changes to flight books.

Also, in the event of a cancellation, it is easier to deal directly with the airlines for a refunds of your funds. So, you can get your refunds without hassle with little or no fees.

Earn flight miles or points

Another reason when comparing booking your flight tickets direct Vs 3rd party, it is said you earn miles if booked from airlines . So many airlines offers your miles to encourage flight booking directly on their website. I love to book from 3rd party website because I can compare flight deals. However, I couldn’t get a friend to book on the same 3rd party website because of the miles he enjoys with a air peace flight booking.

This points or miles you can use to get a discount on your next flight ticket fees. On the other hand, most 3rd party website offers very discounted fares from airlines. So, you may not get the extra advantage of earning points using 3rd party website.

These reward points you can easily redeem when you book your next flight.

3rd party online flight booking

The other option to book a plane ticket is through 3rd party sites or agent. These sites liaise with airlines to book your flight on your behalf. There are so many 3rd party websites for online flight booking you can use. However, the best website for flight booking is relative.

This is because these sites have their use. So, you can use any 3rd party website like expedia, sky scanner, travelstart etc to search and book cheap flight tickets for your travel.

3rd party sites offers discounted flight fares

Flight ticket purchase through 3rd party sites has its advantages too. The main one is the getting the best flight deals available for your travel. So, if your goal is to get cheap plane tickets for your travel, use 3rd party sites. I would recommend using travel start Nigeria, if you’re in Nigeria.

Travelstart is a search engine and online flight booking sites you can use to book your flight tickets. Just like 3rd party sites. Travelstart pools the flights and prices from several airlines. This will enable you compare and choose the best flight deals available from the airline of your choice. So, if you need to get the best deals for your flight, opt for 3rd party sites.

Although, to get the best flight ticket deals, you need book your flight ahead of your travel dates. You need to book your local flights within 1 month or 3-6 months for international travel.

This is because the prices of airplane ticket rises as your travel dates gets closer. So, it is impossible to get cheap last minute flight tickets. Although, there are cases that last minute flight is inevitable like a work meeting or a burial travel. Below are other benefits of booking from 3rd party airlines.

Flight cancelation refunds

You can cancel and ask for refunds on your flight tickets from 3rd party website. This sites will then liaise with the airline on your behalf and get your refunds. However, this service comes with an extra charge or fee. In which in most cases are quite outrageously high for some 3rd party website.

I normally use Travelstart to book both my flights for local and international travel. They offer free cancellation or reschedule of flight for travelers. However, you need to buy their Travelstart cancellation product ( Flexible travel date fee). This will allow you cancel your flight within 48 hours of departure for free.

Earn and redeem points or miles

Another perks you can get from booking direct from airlines is earning points you can redeem for a discount your flight tickets. This you can also enjoy with some 3rd party website for online flight booking.

Travelstart Nigeria also enables you to earn miles from airlines. All you have to do is to sign up for frequent flyer number from your preferred airlines. This you need to add at check out for your flight booking.

So, asides the discounted fares from this 3rd party website, you get to earn miles too. This points you can also redeem using your frequent flyer number on the airline of choice.

Although booking flights direct vs 3rd party has its pros and cons. Most 3rd party websites are now offering the same benefit as booking directly. So, if you need to book cheap plane tickets for your travel and still enjoy the benefit of direct booking, opt for Travelstart. You click here to book your international flight ticket. Also for local flights in Nigeria, click here to book.

Direct vs 3rd party: which is best for flight booking?

Lekki is a city with so many things you can engage in or do. It is a place in Lagos where most of the elite people in Lagos stay. So, naturally, you expect most recreational centers or fun places to be expensive. Yes, there are places in Lekki that are super expensive. Also, there are fun things you can do in Lekki that are affordable too. There are so many fun places to visit in Lekki Lagos on a budget. I have visited a lot of places in Lekki yet I have others on my bucket list. So, in this post, I will be sharing my top 10 best places to visit in Lekki Lagos on a budget.

Some of these places are quite close to areas like Lekki phase 1 or phase 2. However, some of these places are as far as the Lekki-Ajah axis, or Bogije.

Lekki Conservation center, Lagos (LCC): Top 10 best places in Lekki

One of my top 10 best places to visit in Lekki is LCC. Lekki conservation center is a nature park located at Lekki. This nature park has different sections to it; family park, tree house climbing, & Canopy walk.

How does it cost to enter LLC? The gate for entry is 1000naira per adult. It is located at  Lekki – Epe, Lekki Penninsula II, Lekki. So, if you need to locate this place, take a bus from CMS or Obalende to Tippa bus stop. The park is just opposite this bus stop.

Lekki conservation center is a fun place to visit. You will have to make payment and wait at the holding area. Visitors are allowed into the Nature park in batches. Maybe this is to enable them to monitor people going in and out.

You can bring your own food to this park. So, if you are visiting LCC, feel free to get your food. However, their food vendors sell in the park at a hiked price. This is not surprising since this park is located in Lekki.

One of the major fun things people do is to walk the canopy. I was scared all through the canopy walk. This is because I have a phobia of heights. So, if you have a phobia of height, you can skip this on your visit.

The tree house climbing is tailored for kids. Although, I would not recommend it if your kid fear heights. But they are quite adventurous, it is a fun option for them.

The family park is free to access. I would recommend your visit this place. You can have a photoshoot, do content creation, a picnic, or games in this park. You can also get finger foods at this park. The opening hour is 8.30 am to 5.30 pm. You can read all about my experience at LCC here.

Lekki arts and Craft Market, Lagos

Another of the top 10 best places to visit in Lekki is the Lekki arts and craft market. This market is also known as the Oba Elegushi market. It is located at Jakande bus stop, Lekki.

Lekki arts and crafts market is kind of hidden. I walked around the market twice before I could locate it. This market host a lot of artworks, paintings, sculpture, artsy furniture, and fashion bags. So, if you want to visit this market, be ready to shop. There are so many things to shop for. I was not prepared for the nice things at this market.

So, if you are ready to shop, you can check out this market for things to add to your wish list. All the sellers are very friendly to customers and tourists. So, you can get their business cards to reach out to them when you’re ready.

I didn’t get anything on my visit. However, I reached two businesses ( collected business cards) and I shopped from them. They delivered the items to my office on the island for a 1000 naira fee. I prefer to shop online as it makes me more relaxed to see the items and make decisions. However, I shopped from both brands using WhatsApp. They were super helpful and offered great customer service.

Nike Art gallery, Lagos

Nike art gallery is one the biggest of the three Nike art centers in Nigeria. It is a 4-story building housing a lot of artworks, paintings, crafts, and textiles. It is a must-see place of the top 10 best places to visit in Lekki, Lagos.

Nike art gallery is located at the 2nd roundabout Lekki phase 1. It is easy to locate because it is close to the roadside. There is so much to see at this gallery. Also, it is free to access. So, if you need a place to visit in Lekki on a budget, opt for the Nike art gallery. I would love to re-visit this gallery again.

The opening hours are from 10 am to 6 pm. I went there quite late so I couldn’t really enjoy the gallery. You can also read my post on all you need to know about the Nike art gallery.

Eleko beach Lagos

Eleko beach is the second beach I visited in Lagos Nigeria. Lagos has so many beaches that I am yet to explore. So, I am glad I visited this beach. It is another place on my top 10 best places to visit in Lekki you need to add to your bucket list.

Eleko beach is located at Eleko beach road, a few distances from Novare mall. So, if you’re coming from the mainland, Eleko beach is quite far.

The entry fee is 500 per adult & child. It is a private beach with a lot of fun things to do. You can enjoy a horse ride or have a picnic at the beach. Also, there are beach huts with mini pools where you can have fun in groups. On my visit, I went with the Myhangout buddy brand. It is an Instagram travel and hangout brand. She offers a lot of hangouts at an affordable price. So, you can give her a follow on Instagram to get updated on the next hangout.

Lufasi Nature park Lagos

Another fun to do at Lekki Lagos is to visit Lufasi Nature Park. Lufasi park is located at Majek’s 1st bus stop, Awoyaya. This park was built to help conserve wildlife due to the Lekki peninsula development project.

The entry fee to Lufasi park is 500naira per child and 1000naira per adult. It is a fun place to hang out with your family or buddies. There are so many fun things to do at Lufasi park Lagos. The park has so many sports activities you can engage in like soccer, volleyball, and table tennis. Also, there is a kid playground to keep them engaged while having fun at this park.

You can explore every part of this park-like Anthill, the mini zoo ( for some domestic animals and monkeys), and the pond. It also has a short bridge which you can use for a photoshoot or content creation.

If you love arts and crafts, there is a store that sells arts, paintings, and craft items. So, you can shop for souvenirs on your visit. You can read all you need to know about Lufasi park and other things to do.

Omu resort Lagos

Another place that made my top 10 best places to visit in Lekki on a budget is Omu resort, Bojije. It is a fun resort you need to visit in Lekki. Omu resort is located at 1 Asiwaju Bola Tinubu way, Ibeju lekki (Bogije). Although Omu resort is quite far, the place is worth it.

Omu resort offers a group tour which you need to book in advance. This tour guide will curate fun activities for a group hangout. I enjoyed the engaging games we did at Omu resort. There are so many fun facilities you can use. Most of them are free to use and others are paid.

Omu resort also has a mini zoo which has some domestic animals and wild animals like snakes, lions, etc. Also, it has an aquarium which is free to access.

I love the rides at Omu resort. My best is the quad bike rides. It was so much fun. You can also ride a horse at Omu resort. Omu resort is also perfect for a family hangout. They have a children’s playground and a shallow pool in which they can have fun.

Omu resort gate fee is 2000naira per adult. Also, it is open from 9 am to 6 pm daily. So, you need to leave on time (coming from the mainland) to enjoy Omu resort. This is because Bogije is quite far and they close early too.

Lekki Leisure beach

Another of my top 10 best places to visit in Lekki on a budget is Lekki Leisure beach. This beach is an affordable luxury beach in Lagos you need to visit.

Lekki leisure lake is located at  Adekunle Animashaun Drive, Marwa, Off Lekki Phase 1, Lekki. It is quite easy to locate from the Lekki phase 1 2nd bus stop. You can then take a bus to Lekki Leisure. (I am not sure of the bus stop). The drivers around there know the area very well.

My only issue is that there is a place where they dump refuse on our way to the beach. So, I would recommend you use your nose mask because the odor is quite offensive.

You need a nose mask for entry. Lekki leisure beach observes the pandemic protocols. The entry fee is 2000 per adult. Also, you are not allowed to bring in your food. And of course, the prices of food are not cheap. I will link my vlog below so you can the prices of food at Lekki Leisure beach.

Awolowo Museum and Private beach

Awolowo Museum and beach is another place in Lagos just like Kalakuta museum, Ikeja. It is the home of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo. So, if you need a place that captures all you need to know about this Legend, visit the Awolowo museum.

This place is top of my bucket list of destinations to visit. It is located off Eleko beach road, Ibeju lekki. Also, this museum has a private beach attached. So, you can enjoy a tour of the museum and a fun day at the beach. The opening hours are 8 am to 5 pm daily. I am yet to visit this museum. However, I will definitely write a detailed post on this museum. Be sure to subscribe to my blog for updates on a new posts.

Oniru private beach

The Last place on my top 10 best places to visit in Lekki is the Oniru beach. Although this beach is closer to Victoria island than Lekki. However, it can be accessed from both places with ease.

Oniru beach is located at water corporation drive, Oniru estate. The entry fee is 1000 naira per adult. Also, the beach is accessible every day of the week.

You can engage in fun activities like horse riding, jet skiing, or a boat. However, I would not recommend this beach if you want to stroll on the beach. This is because the vendors have set up so many beach chairs and benches close to the water.

But if you need a fun place to visit in Lekki on a budget, opt for Oniru beach. Other places close to Lekki you can visit on a budget are Bogobiri house, Muri Okunola Park, Landmark beach, etc.

Nigeria’s creativity is not promoted as much as it should be. So, I take it upon myself to share this creativity on my platform. Nike art gallery Lagos is one of the top places on my bucket list since I started blogging. I recently visited this place and I am in love. Nike art gallery is owned by Chief Nike Davies Okundoye. She is such a pleasant Lady. So, if you want to talk to her, you can easily reach out to her. The gallery is a 5 storey building full of paintings of different types. Also, the gallery has sculptures as well as craft items. My best is the crafts of lovely chairs, tables, etc. These give me so many ideas for options to decorate my dream home. (**Sighs**).

The building is hard to miss by the road side. Nike art gallery is open from Mondays to Sundays. So, you can visit at any day of the week. However, the opening hours is from 10am to 6pm. I wish they could review the time. (lol).

On my visit, I got there almost 5 pm due to the Lagos traffic and other stopovers. I hope to revisit again someday. Nike art gallery is also in other parts of Nigeria: Osogbo and Abuja. So, if you are in these other parts of Nigeria, you can check them out.

How much does it cost to get into Nike art gallery? It cost you nothing to enter the gallery. It is free to access. Also, there is no restriction to any part of the gallery. I walked all the stair to the apex to enjoy the arts and crafts.

Things you need to see at Nike art Gallery Lagos

As stated earlier there is a lot to see at the Nike art gallery. There are so many paintings. So, be ready to see lots of paintings of different types in the gallery. The gallery also houses wood craftworks and sculptures. My best the sculpture of Prof Wole Soyinka. ( I love him for his uniqueness ).

The artsy chairs, tables made from recycled rubber tires and couches are lovely. Of course, the items are for sale. So, if you need pieces of furniture for your home, visit this gallery for options. Also, the furniture is so artsy and perfect for resort interior decorations. So, instead of shopping for furniture abroad, opt for Nike art gallery options.

If you love African fashion, you will love the pieces at Nike Art gallery. There is a shop by the side that sells African prints textiles and outfits.

Nike art gallery is a place to visit to enjoy arts and creativity. So, if you are looking for a place to visit on a budget in Lagos, opt for the Nike art gallery. So, you can visit this beach from the Nike art gallery.

Nike art gallery Lagos: All you need to know

There are so many fun things to do in Lagos, Nigeria. One of such fun things to do is visit the beach. Lagos is close to the Atlantic ocean. So, it has many beaches spread across different areas except the mainland. I have seen several fun beaches in Lagos. Click here to check out other budget-friendly beaches in Lagos.

I am still exploring more beaches in Lagos state. So, I recently visited the Lekki Leisure beach Lagos. This beach is an affordable luxury beach with so many fun things to do. I enjoyed a walk on the sea bed as it has unique oyster shells and sea spiders. Actually, I love the beach spiders as they adapt to the environment. They have the color of the sand so it is not easy to spot them. So, here is all you need to know on your visit to Lekki Leisure beach Lagos.

Lekki leisure beach Lagos Location

Lekki leisure beach Lagos is located at lekki phase 1, adekunle Animashaun drive. How to get there is quite easy. Take a bus from Obalende or CMS, and stop at the 2nd roundabout Lekki phase 1. You can take the bus from the bus stop close to the pinnacle filling station to Lekki Leisure Lake. It is quite known by the drivers or bike men.

What is the gate fee for entry into Lekki Leisure beach? The gate fee for Lekki leisure beach Lagos is now 2000naira per adult and 1000 naira per child. The hike may be due to recent times. Also, you need your nose mask for entry into the beach.

At the ticketing booth, you are given a yellow tag before you’re given access. The security personnel will search you before entering. I love this beach a lot. My only issue with this beach is that you’re not allowed to bring in your own food.

Since this is not my first time going to a Lagos beach, I assumed that I can take my own food along. I bought some items at the Lagbus terminal at Oshodi. However, the security personnel asked us to leave it behind at their post. The only way I can take my own food in is to pay for the corkage fee. This cost about 10000naira. (why will I pay 10K for snacks that are worth just 2K plus).

I later found out that car owners are allowed to bring their own food. So, if you have your car, you can easily take your food in with ease. The sad part is that the food at Lekki Leisure Lake is not cheap at all.

The cheapest food is a suya meal or peppered gizzard is about 2,500naira. Here is my vlog of Lekki Leisure lake, I shared the menu and other costs of food.

Fun things to do at Lekki Leisure Lake

Just like any other beach in Lagos, there are so many fun things to do. However, I love this beach as they provided so many fun facilities for use.

  1. Horse riding: You can engage in horse riding activity at Lekki leisure. I love horse riding at the beach. It is so much fan. However, you need to pay a fee for a horse ride. This service is run by horse vendors on the beach. They reach out to people at the beach to enjoy a horse ride. You can also do a photo shoot with the horses. So, if you need a birthday shoot idea, take great pictures with horses at the beach.
  2. Family picnic: You can have family time at Lekki Leisure lake. This beach is open from Monday to Sunday. So, as a working parent, you can still visit this beach over the weekend with your family. Also, Lekki Leisure lake has children’s play facilities like a bouncing castle to keep them engaged. So, if you need to enjoy a couple’s time with the kids, opt for Lekki leisure lake.
  3. Enjoy beach sports: You can also enjoy some beach sports at Lekki beach. You can engage in Volleyball, beach soccer, or tug of war. I had fun playing volleyball at this beach. Although I suck at it. You have access to the pitch and the balls are already available for use.
  4. Swim at the beach: If you love to have a dip in the water, go swimming at the beach. You have free access to swim at the beach. However, if you don’t know how to swim, you can still enjoy the water close to its bank. The waves of this beach are huge that it gets so close to individuals sitting close to the water.

Facilities at Lekki Leisure beach

I love Lekki leisure beach Lagos as almost all the facilities are free to use. You only have to pay for your gate fee and food. Also, you need to pay a fee for the horse riding and quad bike ride. These facilities are run by individual vendors.

However, you have free access to the sports activities as stated above. Also, you can use any lounge chair or beach benches of your choice. So, if you need an affordable luxury beach, I would recommend Lekki leisure lake.

This makes it easier to have a family picnic with ease. So, instead of paying for beach benches or bringing your picnic needs, these are available for use there. I have visited another affordable luxury beach and this is not so. One such affordable luxury beach is Landmark beach Lagos. At this beach, you pay for everything up to the chairs, food, etc. And just like Lekki leisure lake, you can’t bring in your own food. You can read my post on Landmark beach and all you need to know.

So, if you need a luxury beach to visit in Lagos on a budget, opt for Lekki Leisure Lake. You’ll love it there. Please feel free to leave a comment. Also, you can suggest other beaches in Lagos you want me to visit.

You can do a lot of things at this park-like pre-wedding shoots, family picnics, and birthday parties. However, you belonging will be checked before entry by the security personnel. So, if you’re looking for a free place to visit in Ikeja, opt for JJT park.

University of Suya

Another option of fun things to do in Ikeja is to try out the University of Suya delicacies. Suya is a common food for Nigerians. Almost every area in Lagos has a suya stand at Night. One night-time food that I can’t pass up is Suya. However, one of the best Suya you need to try out is that of University of Suya.

University of Suya is located at Allen bus stop Ikeja. Its full name is faculty of Suya, Faculty of metrology. (Yes, you read right). The place is a famous spot in Ikeja. So, you should expect a queue on your visit. I had to wait in line to get my own suya.

This shop has several varieties of suya like special suya, kidney, gizzard, etc. And of course, the prices are affordable for as low as 200naira. I bought a special suya which is 1000naira. It has a unique taste to it. You can check out my vlog below for all you need to know.

Kalakuta Museum

Another of the 5 best cheap things to do in Ikeja Lagos is to visit Kalakuta Museum. This Place is the home of the Late Fela Anikulapo Kuti. The entry fee is 1000naira per person.

A tour guide is provided for you to give a tour of the museum. I love the tour as you get to learn about the life of this Icon. You can also enjoy some local drinks at the roof top bar at Kalakuta museum. The museum is located at 7 gbemisola street, Allen Lagos.

Kalakuta museum also offers lodge services. So, if you’re look for a short stay place that is affordable opt for Kalakuta Museum.

Ndubuisi Kanu park

Ndubuisi Kanu part is another of my favorite parks to visit in Ikeja Lagos. This park is just behind JJT park but it is smaller in size. It also quite beautiful.

So, if you’re at looking for cheap things to do in Ikeja, visit JJT park & Nduibuisi Kanu park. Just like JJT park, it is free to access. You have access to everything in the park. It has lovely huts and children playground. So, if you an affordable family spot, opt for Ndubuisi Kanu park.

Ndubuisi Kanu park offers free Wi-Fi. However, the Wi-Fi is not as fast as that of JJT park. You can have a birthday party, family hangout, pre-wedding shoots or picnic at this park. I would also recommend this park as a family because it has parking space just outside the park. So, it is quite easy to park your cars close by unlike JJT park.

So, whenever you visit Ikeja, opt for any of these 5 best cheap things to do in Ikeja Lagos. Also, if are new in Ikeja and need an affordable luxury hotel to stay in, opt for Kelsey Greene villa. You can read my post here on Kelsey Greene villa and why it is on my top best hotels in Lagos.

Best Cheap Hotel alternatives

Want to cut cost on hotels? Here are the best cheap hotel alternatives to opt for on your travels.

Vacation home rentals/apartments

Airbnb is one of the most popular vacation apartment rental platforms. This is a great option of the 5 best cheap hotel alternatives to choose from. Airbnb is a platform where homeowners can list their houses for vacation stays. So, Airbnb serves as an extra source of income for homeowners and affordable hotel alternatives.

I love the option of Airbnb or an apartment for my travels. This is because you get a feel of a home. Also, I get to cook my own food and shop from the local stores. So, I get to save on accommodation and food too. It is super easy to book an apartment for your travel.

There are several concerns around booking apartments like cleanliness and the current pandemic. Airbnb has placed measures to ensure travelers’ safety. All listed apartment has to pass their cleanliness guidelines. Click here to read my post on tips on how to book apartment rentals as a first-timer.

There are several apartment listing options that are suitable for your budget. So, if you’re looking for an affordable hotel alternative, opt for apartment rentals. Click to book apartment rentals for your next travel.

Academic Guest houses/hostels.

Another of the 5 best hotel Alternatives you need for your travel is the Academic guest house. This option is suitable if you’re traveling to a place that has a university or college with hostels or guest houses.

However, you need to find out if your itinerary includes such an area. Also, you could reach out to such schools to find out if they have guest houses for rentals.

There are several factors that affect the availability of Academic guest houses. One of such is when students are in session or during the admission process. These guest houses tend to get filled during this period.

However, if you’re traveling during school holidays you can opt for Student hostels or guest houses. This hotel alternative is very affordable.

Before you book an academic guest house, kindly note the following.

  1. Call to confirm the availability for your travel period
  2. Go with your own beddings and toiletries: These options may be available already. I prefer going with my bed cover because that of the guest’s home may not be neat.
  3. Accessibility to restaurants, local markets, and commute options.
  4. Hostels may involve shared room options so if you need to be alone, opt for academic guest houses.

Hotel look has some listing of university hostel listings you can check out. However, this may not be available in all countries.

Homestay

Homestay options are another affordable option for accommodation for your travel. This option is perfect if you want to mix with the locals. Plus is a great option of the 5 best cheap hotel alternatives to explore for your travels.

Families list to host tourists in their homes for a cheap fee. In this setting, the guest gets to stay with them. Also, you eat and dine as part of that family.

However, this option is not available in all countries. There are no homestay options in Nigeria. Also, just a few African countries have homestay options. ( don’t know why).

If you want to book a homestay option, click here to book and confirm availability.

Before you opt for a homestay get to know the family. You can reach them beforehand to familiarize yourself with them. Also, I would recommend you go with a thank you gift for the family. ( Gifts make people happy).

Friends home

This option is a super easy way to save on travel if you have friends in the place you want to visit. Why pay for a hotel or rental?

You can reach out to your relative or friends to let them know of your visit and seek permission. I would pick staying with relatives or friends over rentals anyway.

However, everything has its pros and cons. I love my freedom to explore on my travels. But since it’s not my home, I get to abide by their rules. Some relatives will not allow keeping late nights out. So, if you’re not cut for restrictions, opt for apartment rentals or hostels.

In terms of cost-cutting costs, this is my most recommended of the 5 best cheap hotel Alternatives to opt for. You get to pay nothing to stay with relatives. You could contribute to the home upkeep while you’re with them.

Religious Housing

Another hotel alternative you need to know about is religious homes. So many religious homes offer places to stay for free or at a cheap rate.

Religious places to look out for are churches, monasteries, or mosques. These places do not discriminate what religion you’re. All you need to do is to abide by their guidelines or rules.

So, if you’re looking to spend way less on a place to stay, opt for a religious home. Also, religious homes are quite safe to stay in. I had once stayed in a religious home of Opus Dei ( a catholic home). It was comfortable and I was well taken care of.

So many cities have these religious homes available for travelers. All you need to do is to look out for such places on your travel.

Religious homes

Hostels

Hostels is another hotel alternative you can opt for on your travel. Why opt for hostels for your trip? Hostels are budget friendly options as compared to hotels.

There are several pros and cons to staying in an hostel. The pros include networking opportunity, group tours and meeting new friends. On the flip side, hostels may be crowded, your items are open to theft if not secured properly and personal hygiene issues with flat mates. If you love your privacy, I would not recommend hostels.

However, if you love to mingle and want to cut cost, one of the best hotel alternatives I recommend are hostels. One of my favorite platforms to secure my hostels is Hostel world. This platform covers a wide range of countries around Africa, Asia and Europe. You’d love their picks for your hostels. Click here to book your hostel via hostelworld.

Comment below which of these hotel alternatives you have used. Do you recommend any of these best cheap hotel alternatives? Ciao.

5 best cheap hotel alternatives you need for travel

The late Fela Anikulapo is an icon that lives on in our hearts. So, to immortalize him, his children kept his memory alive through the Kalakuta museum. You can read my post on all you need to know about the Kalakuta museum. Another such place to visit is the New Afrika shrine Lagos.

The New Afrika shrine Lagos is a re-incarnation of the famous old Lagos club founded by Fela. In this club, he did his performances. Also, as an activist, they talk about politics and other pain points of Nigeria’s leadership. However, the place was burnt down in the 1970s by the government. I recently visited the New Afrika shrine in Lagos and here is all you need to know before visiting.

New Afrika Shrine Lagos: Location and Gate fee

New Afrika shrine is Located at NERDC road, Agidingbi, Ikeja. So, if you want to visit, take a bus to Ikeja along. From Ikeja under the bridge, take a bus going to Agidingbi, stop at the technical road bus stop. It is a walking distance of this bus stop.

The New Afrika shrine is open all days of the week. Also, there is no entrance fee. However, you will be required to use your nose mask before access.

Although, tourists are mandated to use their nose masks before entry. It is not really a requirement because my sibling and I were the only ones using masks on my visit.

Also, the Shrine is accessible to people of all kinds. I almost left because there were all sorts of individuals there. You are free to do anything you want as far as you don’t hurt others.

If you can’t bear the fumes from cigarettes that were everywhere, this place is not for you. I can say that I inhaled the highest cigarette smoke of my life.

The sad part is that you can see clearly the no smoking sign in strategic places. However, it is not an issue at this shrine.

Things to do at New Afrika Shrine Lagos

New Afrika Shrine is a theatre for musical performances. As you all know two of Fela’s sons are into music like their father. The eldest Femi Kuti and Seun Kuti who is just like their father in his kind of music.

Below are some things you can do on your visit.

  1. Treat yourself to some African dishes at the NAS Kitchen: The restaurant is just inside the New Afrika shrine. I did not try out the dishes though. However, if you would love to eat while enjoying the music of Fela at this Shrine, check out NAS Kitchen. Aside from the restaurant, you can also get finger foods like suya or drinks at the bar. I went for the suya and a yogurt drink for about 1500naira ( suya-500naira, yogurt-1000naira). I have never seen such a thick yogurt in my life. It was a struggle to pour its content into my cup. Lol.
  2. Attend Felabration: The yearly celebration occurs at the New Afrika shrine. This is to celebrate Fela by hosting a lot of music performances you’d love. Felabration occurs in the week of Fela’s birthday in October. So, if you want to have a fun time at this shrine, attend Felabration. Also, you can attend type weekly performances by his sons. Seun Kuti plays every last Saturday of the month while Femi Kuti plays for free every Thursday. I would recommend you visit the New Afrika shrine on these days to enjoy the shows and get the best out of your visit.
  3. Shop for Souvenirs: I love to shop for souvenirs whenever I visit a place. So, I couldn’t pass up an opportunity to get something for myself and my family. I bought a bracelet for a friend. You can shop for artsy gifts at the souvenir shop in the Afrika shrine. Most of the items are affordable too.

The yearly Felabration is so much fun in Lagos. So, if you need a reason to visit the New Afrika shrine in Lagos, go for Felabration. Click here to book affordable hotels in Lagos if you need a place to stay in Lagos.

There are so many restaurants and brands that sells foods. I can’t count the amount of times, their waiter/waitress came to me to ask if I need food. (Omy God!, I almost lost it). You can also watch my vlog below. Don’t forget to subscribe, thanks.

Landmark beach Lagos: 6 Fun things to do and know

Erin Ijesha waterfall (also known as Olumirin) is the most popular waterfall in Nigeria. Although, there so many waterfalls in Nigeria, Erin Ijesha is the most visited. It is a seven-step waterfall. The first three steps are quite easy to access. However, the rest steps up to the 7th step is for the brave. I stopped my hiking at the 2nd step. ( I just can’t continue further). The path upward is so steep and meanders. Hiking to the last step (7th) leads to a small village Abake village (in Ekiti state).
