Are there fun things to do in Abeokuta, Ogun State?

I wouldn’t be surprised if you’re asking this question, especially if you’re part of those who think that fun begins and ends within the walls of Lagos state. Although Lagos has so many fun things to do. It is NOT the only place where you can have fun in Nigeria.

Nigeria has so many fun things to do. Check these top 50 most beautiful places to visit in Nigeria for things to do.

As someone who is constantly exploring, I can tell you that there are fun things to do in every city! Sometimes, you need to take a trip out of Lagios, even if it means visiting the neighboring town and staying in Abeokuta, Ogun state.

Abeokuta is one of my favorite cities to visit in Nigeria, due to its quietness as compared to Lagos. Whenever I need a break from the hustle and bustle of Lagos, you’ll see me running away to Abeokuta.

Things to do in Abeokuta

Here are some of the fun things I do whenever I’m in Abeokuta

1. Climb Olumo Rock

No matter the number of times I have been on this mountain, it never gets old to me. I’m sure some of my friends are tired of following me to Abeokuta as I would always find a way to drag them to Olumo Rock. But can you blame me? I heard only fascinating stories about this place while growing and it stuck with me. So, I never get tired of experiencing this place.

The thrill is usually more exciting when you go there with friends as you wouldn’t feel the strain of the hike. It also serves as my source of exercise as I wouldn’t exactly say that I’m a gym body.

Many people do not know this, but there is an art gallery on Olumo Rock. So, you can also serve your eyes when you visit this place. I love how it makes people appreciate art and culture more.

What about the views you get from the top of this rock? I would say you’re abnormal if one of your first thoughts isn’t to bring out your phone and take pictures when you’re on the top of the rock.  Aside from how beautiful the views are, they are also relaxing. If you are yet to visit Olumo Rock, you’re missing.

2. Shop at Adire Mall

Shopping is usually a fun thing to do, especially when you’re doing this at the Adire Mall.

I initially didn’t know about this place until after some trips to Abeokuta. As in my usual nature, I walked around asking the locals where I could buy stuff that is sentimental to the city and someone asked if I had visited Adire Mall.

There is a place called Adire Mall? You can imagine my shock when I got to this place. My mouth opened in awe and I knew that I was in the right place. Ever since my first visit to this mall, I always ensured that I shopped at Adire Mall anytime I’m in Abeokuta.

I think it’s thoughtful to always buy things and take them back for family and friends whenever you visit another city. So, getting Adire from this mall became a culture for me whenever I visit Adire Mall. Of course, I also got some nice stuff for myself.

I don’t know if you’ve ever visited an Adire Mall before. I’m glad that they have such a place in Abeokuta and exploring this mall is always fun. It should be on your bucket list of things to do in Abeokuta and places to visit whenever you’re in Abeokuta.

3. Visit Obasanjo Library

One of the fun things that stands out to do in Abeokuta is to visit Obasanjo’s library. Owned by a former president of Nigeria, you will be in awe of this facility.

When I learned that there was an outstanding library in the city, I was more than eager to visit it. I always see libraries as a place of solitude where one can get lost in the world of books and still have an enjoyable time. So, I was looking forward to my visit to this place.

However, I was in for a treat as I got there and realized that the place is more than just a library. Instead, it stands as a full-time resort.

Here, you can explore different aspects of nature and even lodge there. Yes, there is a provision for accommodation at this place. So, if you’re looking for a high-end place to stay in Abeokuta, you can stay at this resort and also enjoy the library.

I loved that there is a tour guide to give me clarity on things I did not understand. You can bet that there is a history surrounding this place, and you should be curious to learn about them while also heeding the call of the library.

4. See Kuti’s Heritage Museum

A place that pays respect to the great Fela Kuti is Kuti’s Heritage Museum. It is one of the fun things to do in Abeokuta on your visit. You are sure that I would be pleased to see this museum. Luckily for you, I’ve been to this place, and I recommend that everyone should see it.

It is interesting that this museum is the house where all the Kutis grew up. Years later, this place has been renovated and turned into a museum as an act of respect to the music legend.

From what I learned, the place was built by Fela’s parents. Fela and all his siblings grew up in the place.

From the outside, it may look like any other regular building. But when you get inside, the pictures when the place comes alive. It is truly a preservation of memories as you can envision how growing up was for the Kuti family.

I was happy to visit this place as it felt like the museum enabled me to share a bit of a bond with the Kutis. I may have never known them physically as I only knew the stories. However, I felt closer to them by visiting this museum.

The place also has a repeat visit value. So, do not be surprised if you find yourself compelled to visit this place more times than you planned.

A simple museum is the Kalakuta Museum in Lagos. This place holds the history of Fela’s Music and some of the things he achieved. Another place that speaks to Fela’s music is the New Afrika shrine.

5. Go to Alake’s palace

Whenever I visit another city, I always try to immerse myself in its culture and history. It is my little way of wanting to understand the locals better. One of the best to do this would be by visiting the Palace.

On some occasions, you may be lucky to get inside the inner chamber. But often, you’ll get to see the exteriors and hang around in the courtyard which is also fascinating. One thing about palaces is that there are always people hanging around. And you can be sure that there’d be stories.

I do not fail to engage these storytellers so that I can get more information. In such cases, I always lose track of time due to the fascinating stories.

Visiting Alake’s palace is one of the fun things to do in Abeokuta.

These 5 fun things to do in Abeokuta are my go-to on my visit to Abeokuta. It took me years to actually explore this city though it was home for a long time.

Feel free to comment on other fun things to do in Abeokuta on a budget. Also, let me know if you’ve visited any of the places below. Ciao.

Irrespective of your location in Lagos, you can access Bourbon cafe. They have a branch on the mainland and another on the island.

The interiors of this place are so refreshing to the eyes. When you step into a bourbon cafe, you are quickly captivated by the cozy and homey aura.

Their menu is also so vast that you’ll almost be at a loss for what to pick. Not only that, the prices of the meals on the menu are almost unbelievable due to the affordability.

I instantly turned my friends into photographers the first time we went to bourbon cafe.

5. The Grid Lagos

For the longest time, I held back from visiting this place due to the stories I heard about its popularity. Whenever I’m exploring a place, I love to have as few people as possible so I can enjoy all that it has to offer. You may say I’m being selfish, but I love to explore places when they are less rowdy.

When my friends finally pulled me to the grid, I had lots of fun. Although people were there, I was still able to have a swell time. From the food to the karaoke, customer service, and more, you would enjoy your experience at the grid Lagos.

Their prices are reasonable and the area is clean. It makes you eager to wipe out your camera and take amazing pictures of the gram.

10. Safron Hotel Rooftop Bar

Safron hotel is an amazing place to lodge within Ikeja GRA, but that is not the focus of the article. They have an incredible rooftop bar that gives you the perfect view. One would think that their prices would be ridiculous as it is within a hotel. However, the contrary is the case.

11. 10 Eleven Restaurant & Lounge

One thing I love about this restaurant is that they have variety. Aside from their amazing menu, the meals are also appetizing. Shout out to the chefs at this restaurant.

The ambiance of this place is simple but still elegant. I love that they did not need to go overboard but were still eye catchy. This restaurant is super clean both inside and outside. More people need to discover this hidden treasure in the heart of Gowon Estate, Ipaja.

There is something about this place that keeps drawing you to it. I’ve tried to resist it, but I always find myself going back. You should check it out.

12. Terra Kulture Art Gallery

Permit me to be cliche and add Terra Kulture to my list of budget-friendly but Instagram worthy places in Lagos to visit. The fact that it is popular or has been there for some time does not strike the fact that it still matches the criteria.

If you’re looking for an Instagram worthy place to visit, an art gallery should be one of the first places on your list to visit. It is always a different experience when exploring this place. If you’re a lover of art, you wouldn’t want to leave this place when you visit it.

Today, I want to focus on highlighting some of the most beautiful waterfalls in Nigeria. Some time ago, a friend of mine said that Nigeria didn’t have more than 2 waterfalls. What!? You can tell that I went into defense mode immediately as I have been to a good number of waterfalls in the country.

Sadly, I’ve seen that many people also have this perception. So, come with me, and let’s explore and see the various waterfalls in Nigeria.

1. Agbokim Waterfall

When anyone thinks of Cross River state, the first thing that comes to mind would be Obudu Ranch or Tinapa. During my last trip to Obudu Ranch, I learned about the Agbokim Waterfall located in one of the nearby local governments.

I didn’t need anyone to tell me to add visiting this place to my itinerary. You can imagine my delight when I saw this 100-foot waterfall. Interestingly, it is also close to the Nigeria-Cameroon border.

It is one of the best hiking spots in that area, and you will always see people when you visit it. If you are looking to reach this place from Calabar, the capital city, you are looking at a four-hour drive.

2. Ezeagu Waterfall

Enugu has a reputation for being one of the most interesting cities in Nigeria, especially in the southeast region. I had heard so much about this place, and I was set to visit and explore it for myself.

Getting into the town, the locals were quick to introduce me to Okpa, one of the indigenous meals. Nowadays, I’m always looking for anyone coming from Enugu to help me with Enugu Okpa.

The residents of this place boast of the Ezeagu waterfall. It is one of the fun areas for tourists visiting the state. It also makes an excellent picnic location. I almost didn’t feel like leaving when I visited this place.

3. Arinta Waterfall

Located in Ekiti state is the Arinta waterfall. It is a delightful place for both the locals and tourists visiting the state.

One thing I loved about this waterfall is that it had 7 cascades. My friends and I were eager to make it to the highest level. Typically, most visitors would only stop on the first level.

Well, I can tell you that we had fun trying to get to other levels of the waterfall. I wouldn’t tell you the cascade I reached. But when you visit this place, take it as a challenge and come back to drop a comment on the level you reached.

4. Karu Waterfall

Without a doubt, one of the most beautiful waterfalls you can visit in Nigeria is the Karu waterfall. And you can find this place in Abuja.

When compared to the Arinta waterfall, this one is not that high. It has three layers and it isn’t hard to climb them. However, you still need to be cautious as the steps are steep. But I can assure you that you would have fun at this place.

I also enjoyed feeding my eyes on the environment as everywhere looked clean and beautiful. You can enjoy scenic views and also engage in hiking if you desire.

5. Barup Waterfall

Although not as popular as other waterfalls, the Barup waterfall is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Nigeria. Interestingly, many people also mistake the location of this waterfall. Some people would say that it is in Abuja.

I also thought so initially. However, when I got to Abuja, I began disturbing my Abuja friends about this place. They clarified to me that the waterfall is in Taraba.

I’ve personally not had the chance to explore this waterfall yet. But I’ve heard lots of positive reviews about it and the pictures are also breathtaking. I cannot say yet, but I may be visiting this waterfall in a few months.

6. Erin Ijesha Waterfall

See, just get your camera ready when you are visiting the Erin Ijesha waterfall as you will fall in love with the waterfall. Not only is it a beautiful waterfall in Nigeria, but it is also one of the most popular waterfalls in Nigeria.

It also shouldn’t be surprising that you have to pay a gate fee to access this place. The price is 1000 naira for adults and 500 naira for children. I have been to this place more times than I can count, and it is always a unique experience each time I visit it.

If you’re lucky to go there as a group, you’d enjoy the hiking experience. You can also check out other fun things to do in Osun state like a visit to Osun Oshogbo grove, Nike art gallery, Osun, etc.

This is another beautiful waterfall in Nigeria. I have been fantasizing about it for the longest time, but have yet to visit it.

From the waterfall to the environment and the community, there is almost nothing you would not love about this place. It has four cascades and everything about it is giving. It gives the perfect backdrop for your pictures and you’ll find yourself loving all angles.

I’m sure you’re wondering how I know all of this about the waterfall. Well, I have friends that have visited this place and I hope to visit it soon and get my own experience.

If you ever find yourself in Kaduna, ensure that you visit this waterfall.

8. Ogba Ukwu Waterfall

I was impressed when I visited this waterfall in Anambra state. It showed me that Nigerians know how to convert something cultural into something historic.

There are unique stories surrounding this place, and I wouldn’t want to spoil the fun for you. However, keep in mind that it is a combination of both a cave and a waterfall. If you haven’t guessed already, you can be sure that I explored the cave while there.

The thrill that comes with being in this place is one that you would hardly find in another place. I loved my experience at this place and I recommend it to everyone

9. Osome Waterfall

Osome is another waterfall in Nigeria that many people do not know about. It is located in Kogi state.

When I visited this place, I noticed that the water started from a stream. Then, it went down through the rocks and formed a waterfall.

The atmosphere of this place is one thing I loved. It was as if I was as free as a bird in this place without any worries. I didn’t want to leave this place and look forward to more visits to this waterfall.

If you are looking for a calm place to relax in Kogi state, this is the place for you.

10. Sassa Waterfall

The location of this waterfall may be one of the reasons why many people do not know about it. It is a waterfall in Adamawa state and one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Nigeria. From the first time I saw the pictures of this place online, my tourism antennas were up and I was eager to visit it.

Going to this waterfall was my first time in Adamawa state and I absolutely loved it. From the waterfall experience to the food and the warm welcome by the locals, it felt like a home away from home.

11. Owu Waterfall

I can’t talk about waterfalls in Nigeria without mentioning Owu waterfall in Kwara state. Many people might not know, but it is the highest waterfall in west Africa. Yes, the highest waterfall in West Africa is in Nigeria!

Hiking and taking a dip in the pool before are some of the things people do at this waterfall. They make it more interesting by turning it into competitions. You might not be visiting this place with the mindset of entering into competitive games. However, it would be hard to resist these games when you are there.

My best advice is that you should visit Owu waterfall with an open mindset and you will have lots of fun. I will also recommend you visit the University of Ilori zoo. Although I wish it would be worked on due to its failing state. Also, you can check out other fun things to do in Ilorin, Kwara state.

12. Gurara Waterfall

This waterfall in Niger state is a fun spot for everyone who lives within the area. People always make out time to go and feast their eyes on this beauty. And some of them even use it as a location for parties.

I was in awe the day I visited this waterfall as I saw people using it as a picnic spot. You would easily spot various groups, and you’re welcome to join any of them.

Even if you want to hike within the area, you would find people willing to engage in this activity. It is an encompassing fun place.

13. Farin Ruwa Waterfall

Some people say that this waterfall is in Nasarawa state. Others say it is in Plateau state. It is because the waterfall sits on the border between both states. It is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Nigeria that everyone needs to see.

Sadly, because of its location, not a lot of people know about this waterfall. I have heard wonderful comments about it and have it on my list of places to visit soon.

If you ever find yourself close to this place, do not hesitate to visit the waterfall. I’m sure that the experience will leave a smile on your face.

14. Amanagwo Waterfall

Abia state is also not left out of states that have beautiful waterfalls in Nigeria. It is a wonder why the government doesn’t push this tourist spot as much as other places do to their waterfall. However, I love to discover and uncover these things, which is why I am writing about this waterfall.

Hopefully, you will love it as much as I do.

15. Oferekpe Waterfall

You will find this waterfall somewhere in Ebonyi state. People use it as a spot to get away from the hustle and bustle of life. It has a great environment to relax and reflect. I absolutely loved the time I spent exploring this face. Also, I’ve never heard negative reviews about it.

15  most beautiful waterfalls in Nigeria you need to visit ASAP

Traveling is one of the fun things I love to do. However, I always put off traveling to some parts of Nigeria because I am scared of solo travel. That is where solo travel groups come in. I am gone on many trips within Lagos and outside with travel groups in Nigeria.

There are so many beautiful places in Nigeria to see. From the Nature parks, Zoo, and waterfalls like Erin Ijesha or owu waterfalls among other things.

What about international travel you may ask? These travel groups also go to other international locations. So many beautiful places in Africa are on my bucket list. Thankfully these solo travel groups in Nigeria also plan trips outside Nigeria.

So, if you’re a solo traveler or prefer to travel in groups, these groups in Nigeria are your go-to for trips. They plan your trip, and the activities and make it super easy for you to have fun without the hassle. Although sometimes, I do prefer to plan my own trips too. If you would love to plan your trips yourself, here is how to plan your trip on a budget.

Best Solo travel groups

When I am not planning my own trips, here are my best solo travel groups to hang out with in Nigeria. They plan trips to some of the best places to visit in Nigeria. I love to travel with them. Although, there is a travel group on this list that I am yet to explore. However, feedback about them is super great.

So, I am looking to travel with this group on an international trip soonest. Why are these brands top on my list? As you guys know I am all in for budget-friendly vacations or staycations. They offer various trips within the year suitable for any budget.

To keep up with their trips, follow them on Instagram and put on your notifications to know of the next trip. I assure you it will be fun with these groups. You get to meet new people, make friends, and network. Also, if you have a business, you can meet prospective customers too. We introduce ourselves before each trip and you can share your business cards too.

1. The Gallivanter traventures

The Gallivanter group is one the best solo travel groups I recommend. I first saw this brand on Instagram and was sold by its activities.

They plan so many fun activities in Lagos. Also, they plan activities outside the country too. One such country is Ouidah, Republic of Benin.

This part of the Benin republic is still at the top of my bucket list destination. The cost of each trip with this brand is very affordable too.

I recently visited La Campagne Tropicana with this brand. This is a fun private beach in Lagos. There are so many fun activities on this beach like horse riding, kayaking, etc. However, I have a phobia of water, I can’t kayak to save my life. Boat cruise, I am all in but Kayak, Hell no!

Best solo travel group for singles

2. Funatics Adventure

Another of the best solo travel groups in Nigeria to hang out with is Funatics adventure. I love this brand a lot. I have gone on several trips with them. The fun part, you get to network with everyone in the group that you’ve not met.

I love to go on trips with this brand. So, I am always on their Instagram page to find out about the latest trip. Previously I joined a trip with another brand that failed. You know the sort of trip that they don’t keep to time. Getting a refund was impossible.

So, these brands for me are the best solo travel groups to hang out with. I have visited Nike’s guest house, Erin Ijesha waterfall, Osun Oshogbo grove, and Omu resort among other places with this brand.

Funatics is currently planning an international trip to the Benin republic and I would recommend you tag along. It is always fun to travel with this group. They are true to their brand name funatics. I made so many friends from this Solo travel group. So, If you need a perfect solo travel group for singles, travel with Funatics.

Solo travel groups in Nigeria

3. Naija explorers

Naija explorer is another solo travel group in Nigeria to go on trips with. This brand goes on trips to several places in Nigeria inclusive of the northern region.

There are so many fun things to do in Northern Nigeria like visiting the Yankari games reserve, Zuma rock, or the waterfalls. However, due to the unrest, I have not visited them.

Naija explorers plan trips to these regions, especially the parts that are still safe in the north. I would love to visit the North someday when things get better.

You can also go on international trips with this brand. A recent trip by Naija explorers is to the Benin republic. They have visited so many places in the republic of Benin that I never knew existed. I have been to this country, check out my post on the ultimate guide to Cotonou and fun things to do.

So, if you’re looking for solo travel groups for singles in Nigeria, check out these groups. Feel free to comment on other solo travel groups in Nigeria that are affordable. xoxo.

3 Best Solo travel groups in Nigeria

Have you ever been to JJT park Ikeja before? If you live in Lagos, Nigeria, you must have heard about this park even if you have never visited it.

Where is JJT park Lagos located? In case you are wondering, JJT is an acronym for Johnson Jakande Tinubu, and it is a park located in Ikeja. Thus, making it one of the most fantastic places to relax on the mainland in Lagos state. It is a few walking distance to Ndubuisi Kanu park as well as the famous Shoprite mall. It was commissioned in 2017 and has since been one of the best places to have a picnic or alone time on the mainland.

My friends and I got into a heated argument one day, arguing that there were no cool relaxation spots on the mainland. It made me realize that many people think that fun is only limited to the island in Lagos state. There are so many fun places like beaches, restaurants to hang out, and even parks like Muri Okunola park on the island. Knowing about JJT park made me have a solid argument when I told them there were also lovely relaxation spots on the mainland.

The issue is that many people are unaware of this spot which is surprising because whenever I go to JJT park Ikeja during the weekend, it is always filled with people. I love the location of this place as it is in Ikeja, a strategic location on the mainland. In addition, there is a certain calm and serenity that you will enjoy when you visit this park.

JJT park Ikeja: Things you would love and gate fee

There are certain things about JJT park Ikeja that always have me going back there from time to time, and you would also love these things. One thing that I love about this park is that the gate fee for JJT park Ikeja is totally free to access just like most parks in Lagos.

Of all the parks in Lagos that I have visited, Jhalobia park and garden is the only paid-to-access. It is to be pre-booked and the gate fee is about 2000naira per person.

Some of them include the following:

  • The Ambiance: JJT park Ikeja is located near the house of assembly in Lagos state and is usually quiet. Asides from the cars that may be passing, you wouldn’t experience any rowdiness or extreme noise whenever you visit this park. You would always find me with a book and mat whenever I’m going to JJT park, and I always tend to lose track of time when I’m there due to the serenity I enjoy. The park gets busy during the weekends, and you would occasionally find some people come there with thor speakers. However, the ambiance remains peaceful and bubbly. It also allows you to mingle with people and make friends. If you’re ever looking for a place to visit to calm your spirit, you should go to JJT park. I always leave there calmer than when I arrived, and I’m grateful we have such a spot on the mainland.
  • The Space: I don’t know what you have in mind whenever you think of parks, especially Nigerian parks. However, this isn’t one of those tiny boxed parks you would find around. I would consider it a form of exercise if you could walk from one end of JJT park to the other. JJT is such a vast land with ample space to accommodate many people. So, no matter the number of people that visit this place in a day, there is always space to accommodate everyone.

If you’re looking to take your family for a picnic, consider going to JJT park Ikeja, as they have enough space for children to play around. You will have no issues when you visit this place for those who are claustrophobic. In addition, I loved that I could always find a corner for myself without other people being in my business.

  • Security: I found it interesting when I discovered that the security personnel at JJT were proactive. Yes, this park is without restrictions, as everyone is allowed to visit it. However, they also check people before entering and would not let you in if you carry anything considered dangerous.

For example, I was once invited to a birthday celebration at JJT park, and the celebrant wasn’t allowed to take in breakable bottles. Instead, security urged us to look for plastic bottles to transfer the drinks. It was either that, or we left the breakable bottles at the gate and got it on our way out. Some people may find this extreme and uncomfortable. But it brought a sense of calm for me as I realized that it was a necessary security measure to ensure that people felt safe while at the park. In addition, you would also see security officials around since the park is near the state house of assembly.

  • No entrance fee: When you think about some parks, you wonder how much it would cost to get into the park. After all, it is a culture for most parks to collect money from people before they let them in. They say that the money is used to maintain the park. But the difference is the case with JJT park, as it is a public park that is free to enter. Yet, you would always see that the place is clean. They have people who always clean up the area, ensuring that it looks appealing whenever you visit it. Finding clean public spaces is rare, but JJT park is an exception.
  • Statue: One of the best ways to describe JJT park Ikeja to anyone is to tell them to look out for a park with statues close to the state house of assembly. It has some interesting statues that represent some significant figures in that state. You will be intrigued by these statues when you visit JJT park, especially if you’re visiting for the first time. In addition, they also make the perfect picture-taking spot in the park. You will find yourself trying to get an ideal location by the giant statues for pictures. The park also has an array of flags that could serve as an excellent picture spot.
  • The food stand: What if I get hungry while at JJT park? It is one of the most typical questions I get from foodies like me. These people always want to be sure that their tummy is secured when they are at JJT park. Yes, you have no problem with food at this park, as there is an accessible food court. You can buy whatever you desire as they have an array of options. It comes in handy that there is a food stand within the park, as one doesn’t have to go far before one can get something to eat.

Things to note before visiting JJT park

So, you may be excited and planning to visit JJT park Ikeja soon. However, there are some things you should note.

  • There is no parking space: There is no provision for parking space at JJT park. So, it gets frustrating when you drive there. Typically, one may have to get a paid parking space at a nearby park and walk down to JJT park. It is one of the little inconveniences that come with visiting JJT park.
  • Opening hours of JJT park Ikeja: You can always decide to visit JJT park any day you desire. But keep in mind that the park closes by 6.30 pm. So, you cannot stay beyond that time.

fun places in Badagry

Badagry Lagos is a fun place to visit in Lagos. Asides from the obvious road traffic and bad road, there is so much to see. I have been exploring new places in this part of Lagos. And I will say I am so impressed. So, here are my top 5 best things to do in Badagry Lagos.

These places are fun and affordable too. So, if you need places to visit in Badagry on a budget, check out these places. Also, you can read my post on other 9 free and fun things to do in Lagos, Nigeria.

5 Best things to do in Badagry- Visit Gberefu Island, Point of no return

Although this place holds so many memories of slavery yet it is a fun place to visit. Geberufu Island, also known as the point of no return is located at Badagry. If you are looking for the list of beaches in Badagry to visit, definitely check out Gberefu Island. It is top of my recommendation of 5 best things to do in Badagry.

How can I locate Gberefu Island? Take a bike from Babadgry roundabout to O2 bar. Then you will ask where to take a ferry ride to Gberefu island. A ride cost 100naira per person.

Also, you take a short walk from the Badagry slave trade museum to the ferry spot. There you can take a ferry to point of no return island.

Gberefu island is a small community. There are some resident villages on this island. The entry fee is 200naira per person. Also, you can shop for souvenirs for yourself.

It is a very long and stressful walk down to the beach of Gberefu island. This path is where the slave masters took the slaves to be shipped off abroad. You also get to see the well that the slaves were made to drink from which they lose their memories. Some say this place got its name because any slave that got to this island, never comes back home. Yet, this place is one of my top of 5 best things to do in Badagry, Lagos.

Whispering palms resort.

This is another of the 5 best things to do in Badagry on your visit. This resort is located at Ajido road, Aradagun bus stop, off Badagry expressway.

Although, this resort is supposedly a beach. However, it is not a beach after all. It is close to the waterfront where there are lounge chairs to relax and unwind. Also, you can partake in water activity like boat pedal ride. This ride is quite similar to kayaking and it requires 4 people to take the ride.

Another fun activity you can do is to ride a bicycle close to the villas. These villas are available for lodging for as low as 20000naira per night. The bicycle ride is quite fun.

The entry fee to whispering palms resort is 1500naira per person. This fee guarantees you at least 2 paid activities; boat ride and bicycle ride. However, you can partake in other free-to-access activities like swimming, playing tennis, snooker, dart, golf, etc.

Best things to do in Badagry Lagos

Badagry Slave trade museum

This is my least favorite place to visit in Badagry. Why is it so? This is because of the horrible tale of the ordeal of the slaves back then. However, a visit to Badagry is incomplete without visiting this historic place.

Badagry slave trade museum is a few distances from O2 bar. On my visit, I shared a ride with some documentary reporters for free.

The entry fee for a tour of the museum is 500naira per person. Like all museums I have visited in Nigeria, you’re not allowed to film the museum. However, I was able to get some pictures in the compound of the museum. We got to know that the slaves were not all blacks. There were white slaves that were captured and sold back.

The story that caught my attention was that of the woman that killed herself and her children so as not to be made slaves. Why would someone prefer to die than to be a slave? The inhuman way in which the slaves were treated was enough reason for her to commit suicide than to be treated less than human.

Budget friendly things to do in Badagry Lagos

First storey buiding

Another of the 5 best things to do in Badagry is to visit the first story building. It is a few distances from the Badagry slave trade museum.

This building houses the first translated bible by Bishop Samuel Ajayi Crowther. Also, it has the first well in Nigeria.

Suntan Beach

Another of the 5 best to do in Badagry is to visit Suntan beach. This beach is the first and the cheapest beach in Badagry that I visited. The entry fee to Suntan beach is 500naira per person.

On my way to this beach, I had a hearty yam and egg meal at a local buka in Badagry. You can take a tricycle of 100 to the beach. This beach is a very popular beach in Badagry Lagos.

At this beach, you can have access to the beach huts for free. Fun things you can do at Suntan beach include horse riding, playing soccer at the beach bank, or playing board games with your friends. This beach is also perfect for pre-wedding shoots.

Visit Gberefu Island ( Point of no return)

This island was named as the point of no return as any slave that got here is shipped of overseas. Now a tourist attraction to many, this is a budget friendly beach in badagry to visit.

So if you a place to a explore after seeing the slave trade museum, it only make sense to visit Gberefu. It is a very neat beach with its architecture building still intact.

The entry fee to this beach is ridiculously cheap. How do I get to gberefu island? You take ferry ride to cross over to this beach, then take a bike to the point of no return beach.

You can also opt to trek. However I don’t recommend this as it is a very long walk to the beach. I couldn’t help asking frequently, “Are we there yet?”. The while experience was fun and I enjoyed my stay.

Best places to stay in Badagry Lagos

The road to Badagry Lagos is quite terrible. Although, it still under construction for a while now. So, I would recommend you stay at Badagry to enjoy a full day out.

One of the best hotels in badagry I would recommend is Rolling kings hotel. This hotel is quite new and very popular. The room at this hotel is about 12,000naira per night excluding breakfast. However, you can eat at the restaurant or order food in your room using the intercom.

Also, you have free access to the pool area as a resident of the hotel. The thing that stood for me at this hotel is their customer service and the pleasant attitude of the staff. Even when I really needed a towel from them, I waited for as long as it took just because of the attitude of their staff. Click here to book similar hotel in Badagry, Lagos.

So, if you’re at Badagry Lagos, here are my top 5 best things to do at Badagry. Another fun thing to do is to go sightseeing around O2. They have some of the artsy and old house that you’d love. Also, you can visit the Badagry slave market too.

Best app or site to sell gift cards in Nigeria

Typically I avoid working with brands that offer me gift cards for my services. This is because I had no idea how to sell these gift cards in Nigeria and convert them to Naira. So, I stumbled upon Nosh app which is one of the best app to buy and sell gift cards in Nigeria.

Ever since I was able to successfully sell my Nordstrom gift card online for naira, I would not mind working for a gift cards reward. Which site or app is the best to redeem gift cards in Nigeria? There are so many sites or apps you can choose from out there to trade your gift cards for cash. My best app to buy and sell gift cards in Nigeria without hassle is the Nosh app. This app I love a lot. Also, I love to use some apps for my travels too. You can read my post on travel apps you need as a solo traveler.

Best app to buy and sell gift cards in Nigeria

I love to learn new things a lot. So, I stumbled upon a blog that shared a lot of sites you can redeem $100 gift cards to naira. I tried out a few. Some of these sites are super complicated to use. I hate complicated! So, I finally found one app that is super easy to use called the Nosh app.

Nosh app Review: buy or sell gift cards online

Nosh app is a simple application you can easily download from your app store or play store. All you have to do is to input your personal information, bank details and create a pin for withdrawal.

Their customer service is quite helpful. You can easily reach out to them for any inquiries using the chatbox. Also, you can your google play $100 gift card or any gift cards to Naira, Cedis, or Dirham. What this simply means is that you can use this app in Dubai, Ghana, or Nigeria to trade your gift card with ease.

You can check out the gift card prices on their app before you redeem them. Also, you can check the type of gift cards they usually redeem on their site listed on your trading dashboard. Any further assistance you need you can direct to their customer service for a quick resolution.

Which gift card has the highest rate in Nigeria?

The rate that applies to each gift is found on easily your dashboard. My $100 Nordstrom gift card was equivalent to 30000naira at the time of writing this article on Nosh.

How can you trade your gift card on Nosh? It is super easy. All you have to do is to snap the e-gift card or physical gift card and upload it for review. Upon approval, you will be credited with payment into your Nosh wallet.

You choose to buy other gift cards with funds in your wallet or withdraw the funds. My only issue with the value of the gift card exchange rate is that it is quite small as compared to the normal USD exchange rate. Typically now $100 is now about 57,000naira while the gift card equivalent is 30000naira.

Can you redeem e-gift cards for cash?

Most sites or apps typically do not redeem e-gift cards. My Nordstrom gift card was an e-gift card. So, it was super difficult to redeem it for cash.

However, on the Nosh app, all you have to do is to screenshot the gift cards showing their card pan and pin. This will be reviewed and converted into Naira or your choice currency for you. What did I do with the funds redeemed from my gift cards?

Nosh app came through as at the time I planned a trip to Badagry and I needed extra cash. So, I used the funds to fund my trip to Badagry. I visited a few fun places at this historic place in Lagos. One such fun thing to do in Badagry is to explore the whispering palms of Badagry Iworo. Click here to read all about whispering palms.

Tips to before you book Airbnb short stay

Unlike hotels, Airbnb are listed homes or apartment you can rent for your travel. I love this option because you can choose an entire apartment ( that take in as many guest, this is usually stated by the host) or shared homes.

My first tip is to read reviews of other lodgers that stayed on the home you want. This tip also applies to any form of online shopping. You need to read other people’s feedback to actually know if this property is as described.

I usually shy away from homes with no reviews. The one time I gave one of them a chance, I regretted it. So, I would recommend you go for a rooms with great reviews as a first timer. Also, ensure you liaise with the host clarify on his listing. I booked a private room with no reviews recently. On the last minute, after chatting with host, I discovered that it was not private afterall.

So, talk to the prospect host before booking your stay. You can also click here to read my other post on tips to book Airbnb as a first timer.

One of the best places that promote Nigerian creativity to know is the Lekki Arts and craft market. It is also known as the Oba Elegushi market. If you have ever been to Jakande market, you’re a short walk from the arts and craft market.

Although, I combed the area twice before I found the craft market as there is no signpost to guide you. There is so much to see and shop at this market. So, you should go to this market ready to shop & bargain. Here I will be sharing all you need to know about the Lekki arts and craft market.

Lekki arts and Craft Location and things to do

I highly recommend that you visit the Lekki arts and craft market even it is to window shop. Lekki arts and craft market is located at Oba Elegushi market.

The arts and craft market sits deep into the markets. What can you buy at the Lekki arts market? Personally I visited this market because I love fashion. I have attended so many runway shows like the African fashion week, GTCO fashion weekend, Fashion finest Africa.

This fashion shows spur my interest in African contemporary fashion. The Ankara bags, Ankara Souvenirs, hats, clothes, art works, etc. You can get a feel of these runway pieces at a budget friendly option at the Lekki arts and craft market.

Custom made furnitures

I love the variety of custom made furniture available at lekki arts and craft market. They are all beautiful that I would love to own some of them in my home someday.

You can shop for custom made furniture like chairs, tables, stools, etc. Some of them are so artsy and perfect for home interior designs.

In this market, the sections are organized such that the furniture section is together likewise other items in the market. You can find custom made furniture for all pockets based on your bargaining skills and taste.

If you’re into interior design of homes or own a luxury hotel, shop custom made furniture from this market. They are so beautiful and unique. Most of the furniture designs are similar to those at Nike art gallery Lagos for way less/ cheaper. Beautiful finishes and you can request for custom made pieces.

Raffia Crafts

Another section of the market you need to explore is the raffia made crafts. I love raffia bags (rattan bags) as beach companion and summer staple.

There are so many options for these bags available at this market. Also, there are other raffia hand made crafts like baskets, fans, props, etc. So, you love raffia made items, you can shop them at this market.

Sculpture and wood carvings at Lekki arts and craft market

I love chess but I am not so skilled at it. So, I stumbled upon a native wood carving of a chessboard in this market. I love it.

It is so unique from the conventional chessboard pieces. Also, there other wording carvings and sculptures like masks, horns, tusk, etc at this market. So, if you’re looking to decorate your home, visit the lekki arts and craft market.

Some of the wood carvings told stories of the times before I was born like the times of retro cars, old buses, even the slave trade era. These can be used as a form of a visual educational tool for our generation and beyond.

Only an ardent lover of art can appreciate the lovely art canvas at this market. Some of the paintings were abstract while some are easy to understand paintings with live objects, place or person.

I love the paintings with a modern touch to them as well as paintings that told a story. The paintings in this market range from the high-end canvas ranging from 30k upwards or as low as 18k.

I love to own a painting someday in my own home. They add beauty to your home.

African print clothing and fabrics

I can practically go broke in a market full of African print outfits and fabrics. Lekki arts and craft market have a section that sells lovely unique African print outfits. Although, I didn’t get to explore the clothes because my boo was more sold by the arts or sculptures. I will revisit solely to explore this section of the market.

The lovely maxi dresses and shift dresses are worth spending your last penny on. However, as I said earlier, for this market the price is based on your haggling power.

Hand made accessories

Another things to look forward to at the lekki arts and craft market are the accessories. They are have various accessories like ankara hand-made bags, custom bags, local jewelry, ankara necklaces & earrings, ankara slippers, ankara travel bags, etc.

One of the stores makes gift boxes comprising an ankara handbag, slippers, note pad, hats, etc, you can shop for ladies on your list. So, if you’re yet to shop for your holiday gifts, visit the Lekki arts and craft market. Also, you can read my post on 2020 holiday gift guide for her to help with your shopping this season.

There are fashion accessories for the men too like custom-made ankara bags, shoes, slides, ankara laptop bags etc.

Also, if your a looking for great souvenirs on your visit to this market, there are several options. I walked, into a store that sells custom made ankara notepad and Ankara inspired table mirror.

Lekki arts and craft market: Tips on how to haggle the best deals

After walking the market for a while I enjoyed a hearty meal because I haven’t had breakfast. So, if you need a place to eat after exploring the market, there several options for local dishes.

Also, if you’ve ever wondered how those bags you love come together, I saw a store where they were manufacturing these bags in the market. I am enamored by such creativity and I hope that it lasts forever. This because most small businesses rarely get supports or funds to keep afloat. However, such talent and creativity are worth preserving for generations.
