Some weeks ago, I and some friends packed our bags heading south, as we decided to explore Cross River State. Fondly called the people’s paradise by many, Cross River state is one that stays mysterious to many who haven’t had time to explore the state.

This wasn’t going to be my first time visiting Cross River state. The difference this time was that I wasn’t in a hurry. I went prepared with the mindset of being ready to immerse myself in all that the state has to offer. And, let me tell you, we had a ball!

Visit the National Museum

The stories that the national museum in Cross River state holds is one that you must hear for yourself. Some people would say that it’s boring to visit a museum, but I can tell you that the difference is the case here.

One of the most fascinating things to me about this place is the fact that the building was once the house of a British governor. The story says that the house was shipped to Calabar, Cross River state.

I got to learn a lot about the Efik culture at the place and see some lovely artifacts. The fattening room experience that Efik brides have to undergo is one story that isn’t leaving my head anytime soon.

Due to the fascinating stories, I lost track of time at this place. I learned some traditional songs and even adopted an Efik name before leaving!

Chill at Finger park

As the name implies, finger park is a place for relaxation. I wouldn’t say you should have over the top expectation of this park as it doesn’t come with merry rides and the rest. However, it is a perfect spot to chill within Calabar city. I love the chilled vibe so it had to be part of the best things to do on in Cross river state on your visit.

If you’re looking to have a picnic or just feed your eyes, this is the place to visit. I also love the fact that all the pictures I took at this place turned out amazing. It gives the right background for your pictures.

Let’s leave the capital city a bit shall we? Cross River state has a lot to offer. I love that fun isn’t restricted to only one Local Government Area or only the capital city.

Whenever in Cross River state, you should plan to visit Agbokim waterfalls in Etung LGA. It is a cluster of seven cascading waterfalls and a sight to behold!

This waterfall is open to people of all ages. However, I would say that you have to be extra careful if you’re going with children. Visiting this waterfall also gave me the opportunity to explore local meals in the neighboring villages.

Visit Afi Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary

Although time did not permit me, this is another place you must visit when in Cross River state. Afi Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary is a hidden gem within the state. It’s a place of natural beauty and biodiversity, offering a unique and unforgettable experience for nature enthusiasts and conservationists.

One thing I know is that there’s lots to learn when visiting this place. I heard that there are usually tour guides to take you around, explaining all you need to know and answering all questions.

I’ve made a mental note to ensure that I must go to Afi Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary on my next trip to Cross River state.

Obudu cattle ranch

Have you been to Cross River state if you do not explore Obudu cattle ranch? From the lush vegetation to the cable car rides to the hiking experience and more, Obudu cattle ranch is GIVING!

Located in Obanliku LGA, Obudu cattle ranch is a tourists delight! It is the best place to visit if you’re looking for an escape. One thing for sure is that you wouldn’t want to leave after spending time at the ranch.

Going from Calabar, the capital city of Cross River state to Obudu Cattle ranch is quite a distance. So, it isn’t something to plan to explore within a day. Instead, be open to spending some time there.

Visit Marina Resort

Marina resort in Calabar, Cross River state, is the definition of FUN! It is a place for everyone, irrespective of your age. I was giddy with excitement when I saw the electric horse rides at this place. Marina resort is the perfect place to let out your inner child! For those who are high on exploration, you can get boat rides at this place to places within the city.

The slave trade museum within the resort was a major highlight for me. It’s so real and something that everyone should experience to get a better feel of history. Heads up, you may shed a tear or two!

I also enjoyed shopping for souvenirs from the stalls within the resort.

Hang out at Kwa Falls

Kwa falls is another waterfall located within Cross River state. Too many waterfalls? I don’t think so!

Visiting this place was quite an experience as it gives off a friendly aura. It served as the perfect place for me to clear my head while appreciating nature at its finest. I also got to take amazing pictures at this place and hang out at Kwa Falls is a top activity I recommend for everyone.

Kwa Falls is located at Akampa LGA of Cross River state and not too far from the capital city, Calabar. You are sure to have fun at Kwa Falls!

Visit Mary Slessor Tomb

One cannot talk about Cross River state without mentioning Mary Slessor. Yes, the famous Mary Slessor who stopped the killing of twins! There is even a place within the capital city, Calabar, called Mary Slessor roundabout, where you would see a monument of Mary Slessor holding twins.

By visiting her tomb, you get to dive deep into the story and history. It was quite a remarkable and refreshing experience. I love that history has been preserved this way.

Explore the Ikom Monoliths

If you are in Cross River state and have a chance to visit Ikom LGA, you should keep an eye out for the Ikom Monoliths. Trying to sight and point out these Monoliths became a fun activity for me while in Ikom.

If you’re a fan of art, you’ll be intrigued by these monoliths as they are carved stones with stories to them. The story says that these Monoliths are over 300 and distributed across Ikom.

You must have always heard about calabar carnival, but have you experienced one? This carnival is usually in december. Of course, I couldn’t experience the calabar carnival as I didn’t come at the right time.

Nestled in the picturesque landscapes of Cross River State Nigeria, Obudu Cattle ranch is a proper resort. It was built for relaxation and tourism. Therefore, you do not expect that it would be free to enter into this place.

But before delving into the cost, let me give you a little back story to this wonderful resort and a brief idea of its location.

Many years ago, people referred to Cross River state as the abroad of Nigeria as the state presented lots of tourist attractions, one of which is Obudu Cattle ranch. This place is a hidden gem that offers a captivating blend of natural beauty and adventure.

Obudu cattle ranch is situated in the Obanliku Mountains, quite a distance from Calabar, the capital city of Cross River state. If you’re visiting Obudu cattle ranch, you should keep in mind that the visit is solely to explore the resort as you cannot shuffle between the capital city and this place due to the distance.

There is an entrance fee to pay before you can enter into the resort. This entrance fee is for maintenance purposes.

I cannot give an exact amount of how much you should take when visiting Obudu cattle ranch as the amount you will spend is dependent on many factors. Keep in mind, there are various accommodation types within the resort, and I do not know which of them would be your preferred option.

However, accommodation ranges between 10,000 to 50,000 per night, depending on the room or accommodation type you pick. Due to the isolated nature of this resort, I would recommend that you take along everything you need while going.

Food is not an issue while at this place as you can find vendors selling food. However, if there are essentials you need, it might be stressful getting them. The entry to Obudu Cattle ranch is 500naira per person.

Best Means of Transport

It is best to keep in mind that Cross River state is the end of Nigeria towards the southern region. After Cross River state is Cameroon. So, for those who love road trips, it would be a long ride getting there.

Typically, I would opt for flying there. Unfortunately, there is no airport yet in the Northern region of Calabar, nor is there a direct flight to Obudu cattle ranch. There are two possible options to get to this resort.

• Through Calabar: Calabar is the capital city of Cross River state, and it is home to the Margaret Ekpo International airport. So, you can fly into Calabar, then take a cab and embark on a road trip to Obudu cattle ranch which would take some hours.
• Through Enugu: Another option would be to fly to Enugu, take a cab, and also embark on a road trip to Obudu cattle ranch.

Interestingly, it is faster to get to this resort when you go through Enugu than Calabar. With the new commissioning of the Ebonyi state airport, that might be another possible option to this resort soon.

What to wear to Obudu Cattle Ranch

I don’t know what you might have previously heard about Obudu cattle ranch, but allow me to tell you that the place is COLD!!! During my first visit to the resort, I underestimated how cold it would get, and it still remains one of my biggest regrets.

Due to its high elevation, Obudu Cattle ranch enjoys a cooler climate compared to other parts of Nigeria in the south. While you would want to pack your vacation and chic clothes, ensure that you pack warm clothes like hoodies and jackets. Underestimate the cold at this place at your risk! Don’t be like me!

I would also advise that you pack sneakers and hiking boots due to the hilly terrain of the resort. Also, fun activities at this place require comfortable footwear.

Fun things to do

One of the best highlights of Obudu cattle ranch for me is the peace and quiet that it provides. I always never feel like leaving anytime I visit this resort.

Other fun things to do at the resort include:

• Canopy Walk: Have you gone to Obudu Cattle ranch if you’ve not gone on the canopy walk!? This is an activity for those who dare as it is a suspension bridge that takes you through the treetops, providing panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. I wouldn’t lie, it took a lot of convincing for me to go on this walk as I can sometimes be a scaredy cat. Despite my fear, it was fun and now I find myself longing for it even though I still get scared sometimes.
• Electric cable car rides: Similar to the canopy walk, the resort has cable rides that are really fun. Unfortunately, there are slim chances of enjoying this activity when you visit the resort now due to the ongoing maintenance process, but you might be lucky!
• Bird watching: Remember what I said about loving the peace and quiet that Obudu cattle ranch offers? Yes, I enjoy spending alone time bird watching at this resort. It brings a certain sense of calm that I can’t get anywhere else. I’m always thrilled to see the various species of birds, and sometimes even learn more about them. They are always a delight for the eyes.
• Grotto Waterfall: There is a waterfall inside the resort! Yes, the Grotto waterfall is one of the highlights of visiting Obudu cattle ranch, and it is a natural wonder worth exploring. You can take a refreshing dip in the cool waters or simply marvel at the cascading falls. Trust me, my camera is always handy at this place as it gives one of the best backgrounds for pictures.
• Hiking: Recall that I stated that Obudu cattle ranch is a hilly terrain. It also comes with lots of hiking trails. The lush rainforests and diverse flora makes it an ideal spot for nature lovers.

It is no news that so many African countries are undergoing unrest. I have to cancel my trip to Douala Cameroon by road because of the unrest between the anglophone and francophone regions.

Also, South Sudan recently went into an unrest. Kenya had their own squabble lately but it was transient. Yet Kenya has the most beautiful safaris in Africa to see. Some are luxuries while others are on a budget.

For some reason, the tropical islands stand as one of the safest places to visit in Africa, and Mauritius is one of these places. Staying or visiting this country feels like you’re in paradise. It has beautiful scenery with pristine beaches and lush greenery. 

It has become a destination location to many and it is one of the safe havens in Africa. I love that the country has been able to leverage its tourism aspect. In light of this, I also love that they prioritize the safety of both foreigners and locals. 

There would never be a moment where you would feel unsafe if you visited Mauritius.

Seychelles

Another safe country to visit in Africa is Seychelles. Mauritius and Seychelles are highly similar as they are both tourist islands. One of the reasons why this country has captured the hearts of many is because people feel safe whenever they visit it. 

If you’re ever thinking of visiting Seychelles, you shouldn’t think twice about it. The country has many beautiful beaches and has a certain air of serenity. It presents itself as a home away from home for many. 

It is not surprising that many people visit this country and do not mind paying repeat visits. Seychelles stands tall as a top country in Africa in many areas, including safety.

Are you like me whose mind goes straight to the cartoon whenever I think of Madagascar? Calm down, I won’t judge you!

One thing about Madagascar is that it brings you closer to culture. You get to learn a lot about the country and have a close feel of it. You would leave like a local by the time you’re leaving the country. 

Aside from its cultural uniqueness, Madagascar is also a safe country. It is one of those countries where you can go on relaxing walks in the evenings without any fear. So, why not give it a try?

One thing I admire about Uganda over the years is how they have stayed consistent at improvement. One minute it seems like the country isn’t rated, the next minute, they are standing gallantly as one of the top and safest countries to visit in Africa.

For a place that is home to Victoria Falls, I highly recommend the country to anyone looking to explore countries in Africa. 

If you’re curious about your safety in Zambia, be assured that it is politically stable. Therefore, there are no cases of political crisis and there is general overall safety in the country

Rwanda

I might be a little biased when it concerns Rwanda as it is one of my favorite countries to visit in Africa. It has a calming scenery, and it is always pleasing to see how much the country has developed whenever I visit it. 

From its lush hills to its serene lakes, you can tell that the country has a strong commitment to safety and tourism development. Many people have started discovering Rwanda, and the country has gotten a high inflow of foreigners in recent times. 

I love that safety is also of high priority to the government of this country. They believe that no one should feel unsafe within the country. So, if you’re in Rwanda, you do not need to have your guard up every time. 

Namibia

What are the tourist attractions in Namibia? This is one of the most common questions I get whenever I mention Namibia as a country worth visiting. 

Typically, people think that Namibia is a country with lots of deserts. So, there are no high expectations when visiting Namibia. However, it is a wrong perspective as Namibia is a beautiful country. 

One thing about Namibia is that they know how to utilize their spaces. More often than not, the government develops these spaces and turns them into beautiful national parks.

Namibia is also a peaceful country where the locals are very welcoming. Therefore, it is classified as one of the safest countries to visit in Africa.  

Botswana

Another country to consider visiting in terms of safety in Africa is Botswana. This country has a record for being peaceful in all aspects, including politics. The locals believe in peace and harmony and would heartily open their arms to newbies.
