IKEJA CITY MALL

Popularly known as ICM, there is almost nothing you cannot find at this mall. If you are someone who loves to absorb the essence of scenery, I’ll say that this mall is a trekkable distance from JJT park. However, you can take a cab there if you do not want to break a sweat. 

This mall is also one of the largest malls in Lagos and is perfect for a budget-friendly outing. I wouldn’t say I’m a big fan of ICM, mainly because of the crowd. Even on weekdays, this place is always filled up. However, I am not surprised as it is affordable. 

It has numerous retail stores, a food court, and a cinema. It is an ideal place for shopping and leisure.

MARYLAND MALL 

Well, this mall isn’t a trekkable distance from JJT park. However, it also isn’t so far away. If you would rather a mall with fewer people, this is the place to visit. 

Personally, I love the architectural structure of Maryland Mall as it gives off the vibe of a modern shopping destination. This mall offers a variety of shops, eateries, and entertainment options. It is an excellent spot for a casual day out, dining, or catching a movie. Even if you just want to feed your eyes and window shop, this mall is an excellent option.  

Kalakuta Museum

Many people do not know this, but this museum holds so much history and knowledge about the life of legendary Fela Kuti. It is safe to say that this is a museum to uphold his legacy. Furthermore, Fela’s tomb is next to the house, and the museum is managed by his son. 

It isn’t free to visit this place. However, the entrance fee is affordable. Kalakuta museum offers insight into Fela’s life, music, and activism.

Ndubuisi Kanu Park

Just a few distance from JJT park is the Ndubuisi Kanu park, named after a former governor of Lagos state. This park serves as an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. Although it is a public park, I love that it is always kept clean, all thanks to the Lagos State Parks and Garden Agency. 

The ambiance of this place is usually calm and peaceful. It is typically free to enter into this park if there is no event happening. The park has a lawn tennis court and basketball court as well. There are also snacks stands within the park for you to have something to much on. It is also a perfect location for picnics. 

Opebi Park

If you’re looking for another relaxing spot close to JJT park, you should try visiting Opebi park. It is also free to get into this park. Back then, my friends and I would often visit this place with books that we hoped to finish reading. 

It is a great place to unwind and build relationships with people. It is also a great spot to simply enjoy the outdoors. 

Alade Market 

I would often pass the signage to this market but I had never visited until people brought my attention to it. Yes, this market is the definition of affordable. 

Visiting this place gives you the opportunity of immersing yourself into the local market culture of the region. It is a fantastic place to shop for affordable clothing, accessories, and local produce. You are sure to leave this place with a bag full of items when you visit. 

Lagos Country Club

Yes, I know you might be giving me the side eye as country clubs would typically require a membership fee, and the same applies at Lagos country club. However, you can still get affordable day passes even as a non-member. If you are interested in sports and leisure, this is the right place to unwind. 

The Lagos country club has facilities like tennis courts, swimming pools, etc. It is also a great place for networking. 

The New Afrika Shrine

Is there anyone in Lagos who has not visited the new Afrika shrine? I always find it hard to believe when people say they have not been to this place due to its popularity. Even if you have not visited, I’m sure you must have heard about it.

This place is known for its live music and vibrant atmosphere. Entry is typically free or affordable when there are events there. At the New Afrika Shrine, you get to enjoy live performances and soak in the Afrobeat vibe. It is a great hangout spot. 

Ikeja Golf Club

Just like the Lagos Country Club, you can either decide to get a membership pass or affordable day passes as a non-member. Golf is a new hobby I picked up recently, and I would always want to create time to spend on a golf course. 

I can assure you that it is a very interesting sport that comes with an air of sophistication. Spending time at Ikeja Golf Club tends to be very relaxing. 

Bamboo Lounge

If you’re looking for a place with great ambiance and affordable meals that isn’t far from JJT park, this is the place to go. I remember stumbling upon their page on Instagram and saying that they have a beautiful space. Even when I visited this lounge in person, it wasn’t any different. 

I also love the sense of coziness I get when I visit this place. It is a great spot to relax and enjoy cuisines without having to break the bank.

Lately, I find myself curating a list of interesting activities that can be done within Africa during the summer. So, I’ll be sharing some of these underrated summer travel ideas with you in this blog.

Track Desert Elephants

Have you seen desert elephants before? If not, you need to take  a trip to Africa! Desert Elephants are quite fascinating and these creatures have evolved to thrive in harsh environments. It is why you would often find them in the Safari environment. 

For those who would love to indulge in this activity, you should go to Namibia. In the arid landscapes of Damaraland, you can track rare desert-adapted elephants. Be sure to take along your camera while going as you would get some cool shots at this place.

Explore the Rock-Hewn Churches of Lalibela

Somewhere in Ethiopia lies the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela. I recently came across these and wondered why they have not gained so much popularity. Undoubtedly, it stands as one of the hidden gems in Africa. 

The rock-hewn churches of Lalibela are 11 medieval monolithic churches that are carved out of rock. I haven’t been here, but it is now on my bucket list and I look forward to visiting it soon. 

Go Snorkeling

One thing about Africa is that the continent has many water bodies that are perfect for snorkeling. I would say that there is almost no country in Africa where you cannot go snorkeling. 

I always recommend snorkeling during the summer as it comes with a certain sense of calm and peace. It is an activity to do and marvel at the wonders of the world. If I’m to recommend, I would say Lake Malawi is a perfect destination for snorkeling. Snorkeling here allows you to see some of the most colorful cichlids in the world.

Go Hiking

Similar to snorkeling, hiking is an activity that can be done in almost any African country you visit. I always look forward to hiking because it lets me explore various parts of the country that I might have never encountered if I didn’t opt for a hike. 

Simien Mountains in Ethiopia is a perfect destination for hiking in Africa. As you trek through the mountains, you get to see spectacular landscapes and encounter wildlife such as gelada baboons, Ethiopian wolves, and Walia ibex. Yes, these are animals you would only see in Ethiopia.

Attend Festivals

You are missing out if you have never attended an African festival! Well, you can make up for it by planning to attend one this summer! 

From the energy of the people to the vibrant colors, unique traditions and music, and more, there is a lot to enjoy during any African festival. In fact, you should witness the Gerewol festival in Chad. It is a rare cultural celebration by the nomadic Wodaabe tribe. During this festival, men adorn themselves in elaborate costumes and makeup to compete for the affection of women.

Another fun festival you need experience is the Ojude Oba festival in Ijebu, Ogun state, Nigeria. People travel from far and wide to enjoy this festival. You get experience the culture as well as the fashion. I have never more colourful outfits like that worn during this festival.

Go Kayaking

I always say that one of the best ways to bond with the locals in any region is by going kayaking. Of course, you didn’t think I would encourage stepping into strange waters without the locals by your side. 

It is always fun to kayak with the locals as you get to hear fun stories and admire stunning scenery while at it. One kayaking experience that would always stand out to me is paddling through the mighty Zambezi River just below the Victoria Falls. It was a thrilling adventure!

Explore Ancient Ruins

I know that Egypt is one of the first places that would come to mind when anyone suggests exploring ancient ruins during the summer. After all, Egypt is known for its pyramids and Egyptian mummies. 

However, let’s switch things up a bit this summer by exploring the ancient ruins of Great Zimbabwe. This place was a major trading city from the 11th to the 15th centuries and today stands as a UNESCO World Heritage site. I can only imagine the fascinating stories I would hear while exploring this place. 

Another fun ancient place to visit is located at Sungbo Eredo. This place is rumored to the place where queen Sheba traveled to vist King Solomon back in the day. It was fun hiking experience to do in Nigeria.

Take a Hot Air Balloon Ride

Although I haven’t gathered the courage to go on one yet, taking a hot air balloon ride sits on my bucket list. Many people recommend doing this activity in Magaliesburg, South Africa. 

While curating this list, I did my research and I was blown away by the beautiful and serene landscapes in this area. It is perfect for watching the sunrise. 

Climb Dunes

Wondering where you would find dunes to climb? Visit Namibia! Early morning climbs up the red sand dunes of Sossusvlei provide breathtaking views, especially at sunrise when the colors change dramatically.

I would advise you to visit this place with a camera as you wouldn’t want to miss having memories of these views. 

Go Chimpanzee Trekking

It’s common to hear about walking lions, but I doubt you’ve heard of or indulged in trekking Chimpanzees. I was giddy with excitement when I learned about this activity and its possibility in Africa. Yes, you can go Chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe forest, Rwanda. 

Here, you get to track Chimpanzees as they swing through one of Africa’s oldest forests. Nyungwe also offers a chance to see a variety of other primates and rich birdlife.

Explore Villages 

Typically, people tend to stick to towns when in new places, including Africa. However, that is not a great way to enjoy your holiday. 

The best way to enjoy your holiday in Africa would be to immerse yourself in the culture of the local region by visiting traditional villages. During these visits, you learn about their customs, dances, and way of life. Trust me, you may want to extend your stay.

Mix polka dots and Stripes

One of the cool ways to mix prints and patterns is to wear polka dots and stripes together. Remember to note that the colours should complement each other or colors that goes well with each other. Below is how I styled by black and white polka dot shirt with a mini stripe skirt.

The share a common color which is black and white. Hence, it cohesive and chic.

Any prints with Stripes

Stripes is more like a neutral color. So it goes literally with all print types. However, you need to ensure that the goes match or blend easily. In this way, you will chic without looking frumpy. The goal is to make this look cohesive and of course chic.

This is a super cute way to mix prints and pattern. for example, wear a floral print top or blouse with a another pattern of the same color. This is super cute and fun way mix prints and pattern. I love to wear prints and patterns in this way for a chic look.

This is a super fun way to mix prints and pattern like pro. You can wear a subtle print with a bold print. Also, you mix large pattern with small pattern e.g. Large pattern and polka dots.

What is the difference between Designer inspired vs Counterfeits? This is a question that needs urgent answer. There are so many counterfeits of designer brands out there. It is literally stomach churning.

Sadly, many of these counterfeits dealers also overprice these pieces too. I love designer dupes don’t get me wrong. However, I detest counterfeits. Counterfeits parade itself like the real designer brand using their logos, trademark. Shortly put, counterfeits are copycats without a conscience.

The city is known for its annual Calabar Carnival and historical landmarks such as the Old Residency Museum and Mary Slessor Tomb. You can explore the waters of the Calabar River with a boat cruise or indulge in delicious local cuisine at the city’s restaurants and street food stalls.

Don’t leave Calabar without visiting the slave trade museum in Marina Resort! You can also go to other regions in the state and visit the popular Obudu Cattle Ranch.

Being on the beach means you’ll be exposed to the sun.And if your skin starts reacting to the harsh weather condition, you’ll become very uncomfortable and may want to even leave the beach. This will cut short the fun you planned while planning to spend time at the beach. 

So, when packing a beach bag, remember that protection from the sun’s harmful UV is important. Therefore, go for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30, and remember to reapply every two hours, or more frequently if you’re swimming or sweating.

Beach Towel 

I know you may be rolling your eyes, wondering who goes to the beach without a beach towel. It would interest you to know that there are many people who think it isn’t so important to carry a beach towel when going to the beach. For others, they may forget to add it to their beach bag. 

It is important to add a beach towel to your beach bag as you can use it for drying off after a swim and to claim your spot on the sand. Microfiber towels are great as they are lightweight and quick dry.

Water Bottle

It would be almost impossible to see me on the beach with a water bottle. I’ve always told my friends that anyone who goes to the beach without a water bottle is embarking on a suicide mission. 

Due to the weather condition, staying hydrated is important. So, add a reusable water bottle to your beach bag while packing. You should also consider going for a vacuum-insulated one to keep your water cold throughout the day.  

Sunglasses

Again, is there anyone who goes to the beach without sunglasses? I mean, wearing sunglasses on the beach adds to your fashion optics. But asides from that, you also need to protect your eyes from UV rays while on the beach. 

Your sunglasses should be one of the first things that goes into your beach bag. It is best to go for the ones that offer 100% UV protection.

These are the best footwear you can use when you’re on the beach. Honestly, the sand on the beach can get surprisingly hot, and I wouldn’t recommend anyone using their bare feet to walk around.

Swimwear

Beach Hat 

I’ve always been a fan of beach hats, and I think all women should own one! A wide-brimmed hat can provide extra protection against the sun, keeping your face and neck shaded.

I love fedora straw hats for the beach. It gives cow girl and chic look. You can style it up with your casual summer outfits. This will protect you from the sum while feeling stylish.

Beach Chair

The thing about going to the beach is that you cannot always depend on the chairs they have. It is either the chairs are insufficient and other people have occupied them, or the chairs are uncomfortable. 

If possible, you should pack a lightweight foldable beach chair for added comfort. This can make lounging by the sea much more comfortable than sitting directly on the sand.

Beach Umbrella

If you want extra protection from the sun, you can also consider adding a beach umbrella to your beach bag. It gives you extended shade and is useful during peak sun hours. 

Snacks

What’s hanging out on the beach without snacks? I’m sure you all will agree with me that depending on snacks sold on the beach isn’t always ideal. Most times, the prices are hiked, and you may not even like what is solid. 

So, pack some light snacks like fruits, nuts, and sandwiches when going to the beach. The snacks you pack shouldn’t be the ones that would melt or spoil in the heat. 

Cooler

The same ideology that applies to packing snacks when going to the beach also applies to carrying some drinks along. However, where would you keep your drinks if you do not have a cooler? 

Having a small cooler can keep your drinks and snacks cool and fresh throughout the day. Trust me, getting a cooler that you can always carry to the beach is a worthy investment. 

Lip Balm with SPF

The same way you would protect your eyes and body from the sun while on the beach is the same way you should protect your lips. While on the beach, protect your lips from getting chapped and burnt with a lip balm that contains SPF. 

Waterproof Phone Case 

Being on the beach means that your phone is susceptible to water spill and other mishaps. So, it comes in handy to take along a waterproof phone case when going to the beach. It keeps your phone safe from water and sand. It also allows you to take pictures underwater if you desire.

The current government is always bold in their decisions and give reasons for such bold changes. One of such bold changes is the commencement of the Lagos to Calabar coastal highway.

This has caused so much noise on the internet. Many are blatantly against it. I must confess I do not like the idea. Why now? Why take out many luxurious Lagos beach in the name of development? Is this not a fight against a booming industry, tourism?

Lagos to Calabar coastal highway: Your favorite beaches are gone!

One of the most fascinating things to me about Lagos are the beaches. Although some of these beaches are pricey yet I love to be at the beach.

Yes, many of your favorite beaches are gone with this development. I wish there was another way.

I have visited many of the beaches that had to go because of this Lagos to Calabar coastal highway. Below are my favorite Lagos beach affected by this development. Also check out my round up list of beaches in Lagos that you can opt for instead.

  1. Landmark beach: no doubt the most popular beach in Lagos is affected by this changes. I love this beach a lot. However, this beach is built for the elite and 1% of Lagos. Everything is pricey at this beach.

Yet I had so much fun at Landmark beach. It is family friendly as your kids will have fun at the Waterpark. You get to take fun boat rides, horse ride etc. This beach becomes lit at night.

2. The good beach: How did I get to know about this beach? From my blog analytics, funny right? So many people were interested in the hottest beach in town.

So I got curious and visited. And I wasn’t disappointed at all. The aesthetic, the food, the vibe and beach view. It is super fun.

This beach is barely 2 years and sadly it has to go. They are hosting a few shows till they close down soonest. So follow them on Instagram. Here is all you know about the good beach and plan a visit before it shuts down.

Other beaches close to these beaches that are affected is the box beach, not sure about Oniru Beach though. They are all on the same the beach line. So it may affect them all.

Will this Kill tourism?

Actually no. This coastal road is supposedly to boost tourism. Connecting Lagos to Calabar and making it less tome consuming will boost tourism.

We all know that Cross river state is another Hotspot tourist destination in Nigeria. However, it typically takes a day and half to get to Calabar. In between the jetlag and sightseeing, you will need a full day rest.

I had fun in Cross river state. You can check my post on the best things to do in Cross river state. The Lagos to calabar coastal road will pass through about 9 states in Nigeria. This will naturally make people want to explore these cities.

Also, many will be considering building hotels, hostels or vacations spots along this routes. So, if you have the funds, start your real estate investment in any of these states especially Cross river.

Lagos to Calabar coastal highway: a win and a loss

Count your losses you may say. There are so many businesses that are affected by this development. If you live in the country you know times are hard.

When is it the right time to commence? Actually whether they start now or next year, there will still losses. Below are some of the losses.

  • Loss of Jobs: the workers of the demolished business are back to job hunting. And we know it is hard to secure a day these days.
  • Loss of businesses: take a cue from the good beach ttar starred up barely 2years to now be out of business.
  • Loss of investment: All the structure and money invested into the assets is also lost. I hope government compensate these investors and business enough.
  • Loss of homes: Houses around this Lagos to Calabar coastal road marked out routes also have to go. Imagine having to leave a place you know as home just like that. Well I hope get compensation for their loss.

There are long term benefits to this Lagos to Calabar coastal road project. So, i have chosen not to be naysayer and be open minded. Now I see these long term benefits.

  • Job creation: it may seem like a contradiction. Yet there will be Job creation. Construction workers, traders along the route, hotels, train stations jobs etc. So new jobs will be created across these cuties.
  • Tourism boom: Yes I said it. Although we have lost some beaches in Lagos. However, there are so many other beaches to explore around the coastal road. They will be accessible and will drive traffic to these beaches.

Asides beaches, always ibom, cross river state, Ogun state, all have fun placed to visit. So having multiple routes to these states is a win.

In conclusion, I have a love hate relationship with this project. However, I am optimistic to see how this unfolds. Also, I hope and pray it doesn’t take forever. And for continuity no matter the government on sit. We all know Nigeria has so many abandoned and unfinished projects.

Although this is my least favorite flat shoe for women, it has to be on this list. Personally, I feel loafers are very masculine. So, I really can’t figure out how to style it for a feminine look.
