10 reasons to visit Lagos as a tourist at least once

Lagos is one of Nigeria’s largest cities in terms of people. It is said to be the land of opportunities and has a vibrant vibe to it. As a traveler or foreigner, Lagos has an array of experiences for everyone. So, here are 10 reasons to visit Lagos as a tourist at least once in your life.

Wondering why one has to visit Lagos at least once? As self-proclaimed Lagosian with over 8years of experience, these are the reasons you need to visit Lagos. Whether for tourism or as a resident of Lagos state.

Where to stay in Lagos state?

You can tell from this list that I favor the mainland over the island. The thought of living on the island scares me. The endless traffic, the flood yet the island has so many beautiful places to stay.

On the mainland, I will recommend you stay at Oshodi, Mushin, Airport Road, Gbagada, Ketu or Anthony. And for the island, Ikoyi, Lekki, Marina, Ikate, Ajah and its environs. Also, check out my post on the best things to do in Lagos state for free.

As a tourist, there are several options like shortlet or Airbnb as well as budget friendly hotels in Lagos. I highly recommend Kelsey greene hotel close to the airport, Boss hotels and suites, Jade’s court, Ikoyi among others. I don’t recommend Palm view manor hotel as it was a bust. It is so cute online but it literally falling apart. My best tip as a tourist is to get into city first and then book the hotels in person. So, you can see the amenities and decide if you like them or not.

10 Reasons to visit Lagos as a tourist

I have lived in Lagos for so long. And I have explored so many of its recreational areas like Lagos parks, beaches (private and budget friendly), art markets like the Lekki arts and crafts, Art gallery like Nike art gallery among others.

Stay with me and read on:

Rich Cultural Heritage

One thing that stands out to me about Lagos is its rich array of ethnic groups. Yes, Lagos is a southwest state in Nigeria, and Yoruba is the general language for the region. However, the state is blessed with various ethnic groups.

As a visitor, you can explore numerous cultural sites to learn about this cultural heritage. Some of these places include the National Museum, Onikan, National theatre and Bogobiri House. Here, you can learn about cultural art, archaeology, etc.

However, the best way to integrate and enjoy the rich cultural heritage that Lagos has to offer is by attending local festivals like the Eyo festival. Here, you get to experience traditions and customs in all its glory.

Bustling Markets

As a foreigner in any city, I always recommend visiting the markets to interact with the locals and buy souvenirs to take back home. As someone who has been to various cities locally and internationally, I can tell you that the experience at Lagos markets is quite unbeatable.

The markets in Lagos are very fast-paced, and there is almost nothing you cannot get in these markets. However, I would recommend that you visit with a local if you are a foreigner. This way, you do not get overly overwhelmed.

Thinking of what market to visit in Lagos? Balogun Market on Lagos Island is one of the largest and most famous markets. It has everything you need! Another famous market is the mile 12 market that sells food wholesale price, Mushin market for its catfish, Oshodi, Tejuosho and Balogun market for fabrics, wigs or hair and even clothes.

I love some of these markets for the thrift clothes and accessories. You can check out my blog post on best places to buy thrift in Lagos state.

Beautiful Beaches

One thing Lagos doesn’t lack is beaches. Whether you prefer a private or public beach, Lagos has varieties for you. So, if you are thinking of where to visit to enjoy beaches during the summer, Lagos should be on your list!

Amongst the numerous beaches in Lagos, Tarkwa Bay stands as a favourite for tourists as it offers calm waters that are ideal for swimming. Elegushi beach is the most popular as it is a public beach yet it is my least favorite beach in Lagos, and Oniru beach is another option.

However, with the recent Lagos to Calabar coastal road, most of these famous Lagos beach has been lost like the Landmark beach, the good beach, box beach and some properties in Okun Ajah.

Trust me, there is never a dull time at Lagos beaches. There are always lots of fun activities to do, and they are known for their lively atmosphere and beachside bars.

Vibrant Nightlife

You might have partied in other places, but I bet you haven’t partied the Lagos way. In fact, Lagos should be the definition of vibrant nightlife. From upscale nightclubs like Quillox to lively bars like the roof top bar, Yaba, the city offers endless options for a night out.

Victoria Island, Ikeja, and Ikoyi are hotspots for nightlife in Lagos. A fun place to experience Lagos Night life on a budget is the famous Freedom Park. This was formerly a prison used by the colonial masters and have been converted to tourist center. At these places, you will see numerous clubs, lounges, and rooftop bars that stay open until the early hours. What do you think about doing a weekend nightlife marathon? The nightlife in Lagos is one of the best I have seen and also a great way to make friends.

Delicious Cuisines

I like to see myself as someone who doesn’t really experiment with people as I prefer to stick to options that I know. However, I cannot deny that Lagos has an array of delicious cuisines, especially for foreigners.

Have you heard of Amala and Ewedu? It is one of the local meals that would leave you taste buds craving for more. From street food to fine dining, you can enjoy traditional Nigerian dishes like jollof rice, suya, and puff-puff. I highly recommend you visit the buka hut, herbert macaulay way or the white house buka. These places have great mama put options at affordable prices.

Lagos is such an interesting city that its food scene also includes international cuisines, catering to all tastes. The delicious cuisines in Lagos would leave you so hooked that you may not want to leave after visiting.

Art

I’m not the most artistic person out there, but I can amidst that the art scene in Lagos is flourishing. Lagos has numerous galleries and exhibitions that showcases contemporary Nigerian art.

One of the favourite places that comes to mind for many is the Nike Art Gallery which is one of the largest in West Africa. Do you know that there is another Nike Art center in Oshogbo , Osun state. I never knew until I visited myself. You should watch my vlog of Nike Art Center and I documented my experience. I wouldn’t want to spill the beans about this place as it is a place to experience for yourself.

If you’re a lover of art, you will feel at home when visiting Lagos.

Entertainment

Dare I say, Nigeria has the biggest music and movies industry in Africa, and Lagos is the heart of it all. Of course, I’m sure you know and have felt the influence of these industries even globally.

As a visitor in Lagos, you can experience live performances of Afrobeats, highlife, and other genres of music at various venues around the city. December is usually one of the popping times for shows within the city. You can also watch stage plays at places like Terrakulture.

The New Afrika Shrine run by the Fela Kuti’s family should be one of your hit spots if you’re looking to experience Afrobeat music.

It is home to numerous multinational corporations, financial institutions, and tech startups. This dynamic business environment makes Lagos a great destination for business travelers and entrepreneurs looking to expand their horizons.
