There are three regions in Peru. It is a coast with a lot of beaches, famous dessert- where you can do sandboard and buggys and the famous Huacachina oasis. Also, it has highlands, where you can find the deepest canyon on earth, the Colca canyon and sea the condor fly. You can explore the highest navigable lake, the Titicaca lake and of course Machu Picchu, one of the 7 world wonders of the modern world. And lastly, the lush rain forest with many natural reserves- Manu and Pacaya samiria– where you can see pink dolphins swim in the river and fish some pirañas, typical fishes from the sweet water of the peruvian rivers.

As stated earlier, Peru is a magical country and you will need a lot of time to discover all the places that it has to offer, but I will recommend you the MUST to see places in your first visit of Peru.

As you land in Peru, you will arrive in Lima. Maybe you don’t know, but after Cairo, Lima is the second biggest city in the middle of a dessert. Lima is the capital city of Peru, the only capital city in the whole South American continent located by the seashore. With 10 million inhabitants, 1/3 of the Peruvian population Lima has become in the last years in the gastronomical city of the world.

A taste of Peruvian cuisine

Peruvian cuisine has become worldwide know, not only because of the richness and diversity of the ingredients used in the different dishes. This is because of the innovative techniques by famous national chefs- Gaston Acurio, Virgilio Martinez and Mitsuharu ‘Micha’ Tsumura -which is a fusion of different world dishes and peruvian cuisine. An example of such dish is the Nikkei kitchen. Explore Lima

Lima, Called the City of Kings, Pearl of the Pacific and the Garden City, during the 16th to 18th centuries it was the seat of power for the Spanish Viceroyalty in America, as can be seen in its ancestral architecture. A city of contrasts, where bold, modern buildings stand next to pre – Inca millennial huacas or ceremonial sites.

Lima has a lot to offer, since the modernity of shopping malls, modern museums such as the famous MALI, the MATE of the  world known photographer Mario Testino and the Parque de las Aguas, and also the ancient huacas in the middle of the city, in the heart of Miraflores in the restaurant La huaca Pucllana, a perfect location to have a spectacular dinner aside the magnificent Huaca.

Another nice activity recommended in Lima is experiencing the riding The peruvian Paso Horses. You can visit on a Full- day the famous vast archaeological citadel of Pachacamac, located 45 minutes far from Lima. This temple was dedicated to the deity Pachacamac, was believed to he was the creator of the universe and it was the divinity adored by the old Andean civilizations.

The site comprises pyramidal temples and enclosures built by successive pre-Colombian civilizations and finally the Incas. Highlights include the Temple of Pachacamac, the sun God shrine, and the Palace of the Chosen women or Virgins of the Sun.

Best places to visit in Peru: What do in Barranco

Another place you can explore after Lima is Barranco. Traditional dishes to try, are of course a ceviche, and I would recommend to go to Canta Rana a famous Cevicheria located in Barranco the bohemian district of the capital City. Ask for a Ceviche, Arroz con Mariscos and of course a Pisco Sour our National Drink. Pisco Sour, is a drink made of Pisco, ice, egg white, lemon and sugar, it is very tasty! But don’t confuse it sweetness… it can be tricky… so be careful with it!! I’m sure you will love it!

While you are in Barranco, you need to visit also the Puente de los Suspiros and la Bajada de los Baños. While crossing the “Puente de los Suspiros” hold your breath and cross the bridge while thinking in a wish… if you manage to do it, the popular sayings say your wish may come true. Near the Puente de los Suspiros you will Find the restaurant “tio Mario”, ask for some anticuchos and for dessert some picarones.

Visit Pachacamac

A quick visit to Pachacamac is another place to know. Explore the ‘Casa Hacienda Rizo Patron’ (Peruvian Hacienda House), located in the valley of Lurin (10 minutes from Pachacamac temple), in its beautiful gardens, a Peruvian Horsewoman “Amazona” will introduce you to the world of the Peruvian Paso Horse, narrating the story of this noble animal. You will have there the opportunity to ride the horse and continue eating our amazing food.

Of course, don’t forget to visit Miraflores and the Historical Lima City Centre where the Main Square, Cathedral, The Town Hall and Government Palace are Located. This will be allow me shop from anywhere to USA then Nigeria with little hassle. So, here is my personal experience or review of MyUS shipping company.

Honest review of MyUS shipping

What you need know before using MyUS shipping company

MyUS shipping is a US based shipping and logistics company. You can ship from US to any country of your choice. So, for Nigerians you can shop from US stores using their US shipping address. To register, you need to sign up and choose a plan. Since I have no experience their service, I opted for the free plan.

I was assigned a suite number, US shipping address and US mobile to use for check out on stores. So, to my dismay on receipt of my first order, I was charged about $20 as penalty because my suite number was not indicated on my parcel. Like what? How is that my own fault? .

The sad part was the customer service agent that spoke to me was insisting that it was my fault. They went ahead to advise me to get the refund of this charge from the seller for the error. I was so surprised. How do you go back to a seller for refund for an error in package label?

Shipping cost to Nigeria

The essence of using another shipping company like MyUs shipping was to reduce the cost of shipping. So, instead of paying so much to shop online on international site, you opt to ship to US then Nigeria. Also, most international fashion brands offer free shipping to US.

All you have to do is to bear the cost of shipping to Nigeria. So, I chose standard shipping which is the cheapest available option. The total items that i shipped from them was 5 mini bags weighing 4 lbs. I paid about $25 to ship these bags to Nigeria. This is fare charge if I wasn’t charged for error in parcel label.

Custom duties and taxes

I have always shopped from international brands but i have never paid for custom duty or taxes. MyUS shipping value my items that $87 for customs duty. Initially, i felt it was just for documentation purposes until my parcel arrived in Nigeria.

I got a mail from a brand Fortune global shipping issuing another invoice for customs duty and taxes. This is to cost me another $45 to plus a handling fee of N2500 to be paid to get my package. First, I wondered how my parcel got into their hands. Also, why do I have to be charged another fee added to my shipping fees?

MyUS Shipping Alternatives

MyUS shipping only ships your packages to Nigeria and any other charges like customs duties and taxes are borne by the individual? Like OMG!, why didn’t they inform me as a first time user? The total amount paid to ship my item worth $66 was $70.

The cost of shipping in total was above the actual cost of item. This totally defeats my aim of opting for cheap shipping option with MyUS shipping. So, in my opinion MyUS shipping is very expensive even if you opt for the lowest shipping option.

Moreover, they charge custom duty for almost items like textile , bags , etc. So, if you love to shop for fashion items from international brands, I would not recommend MyUS shipping. If you’re new to online shopping, check out my post on how to shop for fashionable pieces online: pros and cons.

An alternative to MyUS shipping that will not cost an arm and a leg is HOR logistics. This is perfect for Nigerians to ship their items from abroad. I would recommend this brand as it is my go to brand.

The fastest finger gets the best outfits. Also, it will make it easier for you to move on to the next store if you can’t find what you want.

Another tip to note is to be ready to haggle prices. Sometimes the sellers inflate the prices to buyers. So, if it’s your first time the price may sound like a good deal to you. Who doesn’t get excited after shopping for a bargain? Sometimes the prices may be so cheap that you will get excited to shop the items without checking it. I have once bought two pairs of shoes in which I almost had an embarrassing moment in them.

One of the shoes I bought for 1000naira was Balenciaga dupe. Imagine my excitement. The heel got ruined after one wear. So, check the items before paying for them. We know that thrift is fairly used so make sure the damages on the items are fixable. If you must avoid paying for damaged items because it is cheap.

The most appalling thing any buyer can stand is their clothes or shoes not fitting properly. The last thing you want is to shop for clothes that lack fitting. So that your friends won’t look at you like you borrowed granny clothes to wear out.

Except you are all for oversized trends, try out the outfits for fit. You can use the seller changing room or wear the outfit on your clothes to check for fitting. Also, ensure you try out the shoes too. But if you love the outfit irrespective of how big it is for you. Get a good tailor to mend it for fit.

Buy it if you love it

I have to add this to the list. Sometimes we leave great stuff on the table because it is not the right size. However, if you love it and get good use from it ,buy it.

In this instance, you need good tailor. Your tailor will do a good job to make it fitted. Initially, I roll my eyes, like why will I get something that doesn’t fit. But Imagine scoring a cute marc jacob dress which one size up. I will snag and get it tailored to fit.

Patience is neccessary

Thrift stores can be overwhelming. I hate shopping from physical stores. However, you get to see the items in person and decide if you need it.

Start from one section at a time. For example, I will start with the tops sections and gradually move to other section. Take your time to sift through the pieces. You may find great pieces hidden beneath rubbles. So take your time.
