There are mountains to climb, rivers to raft, deserts to cross, forests to explore, and coastlines that make you want to spend the entire day outside. So, I did a deep dive into the 10 best adventurous activities in Africa for outdoor lovers or those of you would rather explore nature.
Whenever I think about outdoor adventures in Africa, I also think about how different they can be from one destination to another. You could be watching elephants on safari in the morning and snorkeling in the Indian Ocean a few days later. You could hike through the Atlas Mountains, sandboard across the dunes of Namibia, or trek through a rainforest in search of gorillas.
That variety is what makes Africa so exciting for outdoor lovers. You don’t have to be an extreme adventurer to enjoy it either. Some experiences require serious fitness and preparation, while others are perfect for someone who simply wants to add a little more excitement to their vacation.

If I were planning an adventure-focused trip around Africa, these are ten experiences I’d put at the top of my list.
Go on a Safari in Kenya or Tanzania
A safari is probably the first African adventure that comes to mind, but I don’t think that makes it any less exciting. There is something completely different about seeing wildlife in its natural environment rather than behind the glass of a zoo. The first time I imagine spotting an elephant, lion, giraffe, or herd of wildebeest in the distance, I can already understand why people become obsessed with African safaris.
Kenya and Tanzania are two of the destinations I’d consider first. The Maasai Mara and Serengeti offer some of the continent’s most famous wildlife experiences, and the landscapes themselves are spectacular.
I’d want to do more than simply sit in a safari vehicle taking photographs. Depending on the destination and operator, I’d look into experiences such as guided nature walks, hot-air-balloon rides, or cultural visits that give me a better understanding of the communities and ecosystems surrounding the parks.
The beauty of a safari is that every day is unpredictable. You can have a plan, but the animals certainly don’t.

I wouldn’t treat this as a casual holiday hike. The altitude is a major factor, and I’d give myself plenty of time to train and acclimatize. I’d also choose an experienced operator and avoid rushing the climb simply to save a day or two.
The reward would be extraordinary. After days of trekking through changing landscapes, reaching Uhuru Peak and watching the sunrise from the summit would be one of those travel moments I’d probably talk about for the rest of my life.
Go Whitewater Rafting on the Zambezi River

This is also an adventure I’d happily combine with a luxury beach vacation. I can spend the morning underwater, have lunch overlooking the ocean, and finish the afternoon relaxing by the pool.

After spending the day exploring the dunes, settling down for traditional food and watching the stars appear over the desert sounds like the perfect ending.
And yes, I’d absolutely want photographs. The Sahara has a way of making even a very ordinary travel outfit look cinematic.

I like this combination because it gives me both adventure and flexibility. I don’t need to spend the entire vacation trekking through wilderness to feel like I’m having an outdoor experience.
Explore Victoria Falls
Victoria Falls deserves a second mention because there are so many ways to experience it. Standing in front of the falls is already spectacular, but adventurous travelers can explore the surrounding area through activities such as gorge hikes, river excursions, scenic flights, and other guided outdoor experiences.
I’d particularly want to see the falls from above. A helicopter or scenic flight would give me a perspective that simply isn’t possible from the ground, allowing me to appreciate the scale of the Zambezi and the surrounding landscape.
I’d also leave enough time to explore at ground level because the sound and force of the water are part of what makes the experience so memorable. For me, Victoria Falls is the kind of destination where the adventure is built into the scenery.
