10 most beautiful islands in Africa that are breath taking

You guys know that I love to rave about Africa. This is because it is an under rated continent that has so much to offer. There is more this continent than the poverty and the bad press that is pushed more than the rich tourism it has to offer.

Let me enlighten you on the most beautiful islands in Africa you need to add to your bucket list ASAP. Thank me later.

Zanzibar, Tanzania

I like to see Zanzibar as a totally different place in Tanzania. I remember traveling to Dar Es Salam and one of my friends brought up the idea of us visiting Zanzibar. I was up to it as it meant more exploration. However, getting there and experiencing the island was a totally new experience for me.

Prior to the trip, I didn’t have much expectation. But once I got on the island, it felt like I never wanted to leave. Many people refer to Zanzibar as the spice island as it offers another type of natural beauty. The northern beaches like Nungwi and Kendwa are perfect for relaxation.

I also recommend that you experience the spice plantations, traditional dhow cruises, and wildlife-rich Jozani Forest. All these make Zanzibar unforgettable.

Seychelles

I wouldn’t be surprised if you already had this island in mind as it is one of the most popular islands in Africa, and a big tourism destination.

Seychelles is located in the Indian Ocean and home to about 115 islands. It is known for its white-sand beaches, crystal-clear waters, and rare wildlife. I love the fact that each of the islands in Seychelles are distinctive.

For example, Praslin island is famous for Anse Lazo beach while La Digue gives the iconic granite boulders at Anse Source d’Argent. With rich coral reefs, this destination is a diver’s dream.

Being on these islands always feels and looks like something out of a postcard. Experiencing them feels like time stands still and it is definitely something you must see before you die.

Mauritius

Mauritius is another island nation in the Indian Ocean and is known for its stunning beaches, lush interiors, and vibrant mix of Indian, African, and French influences. One thing about Mauritius is that visiting it always gives you something to remember.

If you have never seen a volcanic mountain before, Mauritius is a place to see one. If you’re thinking of what to do on this island, you can try scuba diving, hiking, and kite surfing.

I love how Mauritius is a mix of adventure and serenity. For example, you can take a day off adrenaline seeking activities and take a day trip to Ile aux Cerfs. Here, you can sip on fresh coconut water while basking under swaying palm trees.

Bazaruto Archipelago, Mozambique

If paradise has an address, it might be Bazaruto Island. The Bazaruto Archipelago is a group of six islands off the coast of Mozambique. They are known for their stunning marine life, clear blue waters, and idyllic beaches.

Islands like Bazaruto Island and Benguerra Island are famous for snorkeling and diving with colorful reefs, dolphins, and even dugongs. The surrounding waters are part of a marine reserve, offering unmatched underwater adventures.

Asides from water activities, you can also go horse riding and enjoy the sunset. This always feels like living in a dream.

Canary Islands, Spain (Off the coast of Morocco)

I know many may be wondering why I have added this island to my list of most beautiful islands in Africa as it is technically Spanish. However, being on this island feels deeply African especially as they are technically close to Africa.

On the Canary Islands, Lanzarote is known for its unique volcanic landscapes while Tenerife is famous for Mount Teide. You can also visit vibrant towns like Las Palmas and take strolls on the cobblestone streets while indulging in local delicacies.

Lamu Island, Kenya

Lamu Island is part of the Lamu Archipelago. It is Kenya’s oldest continually inhabited town and a UNESCO World Heritage site. This island offers a glimpse into a unique Swahili culture, with narrow winding streets, ancient coral stone houses, and a relaxing atmosphere.

Fun fact about Lamu Island, it doesn’t have cars! Yes, this island has just donkeys and dhows. One of the things I enjoyed doing on this island was watching local artisans carve intricate wooden doors. I also enjoyed all the seafood delicacies that the island had to offer.

Nosy Be, Madagascar

I know it is easy to forget that Madagascar is part of Africa but best believe that it is very much African.

Now, let’s talk about Nosy Be! The air on Nosy Be is perfumed with ylang-ylang and vanilla, and its charm is impossible to resist!

The island offers incredible snorkeling and diving opportunities, especially around Nosy Tanikely Marine Reserve. Plus, nearby islands like Nosy Komba and Nosy Iranja are stunning spots to explore.

While there, I snorkeled at Nosy Tanikely Marine Reserve, where vibrant coral reefs teemed with life, and then visited the sacred Lake Antsahabe, surrounded by ancient myths and lush greenery. At night, I enjoyed stargazing, where the stars seemed close enough to touch.

Djerba, Tunisia

Located in the Mediterranean Sea, Djerba is famed for its sandy beaches and its rich cultural history. Known as the Island of 100 Mosques, it has a unique blend of Berber, Arab, and Jewish influences.

The town of Houmt Souk has a vibrant market.  Here, you can wander the bustling markets while sampling fresh dates and admiring handcrafted pottery. I also recommend that you visit El Ghriba Synagogue, which is one of the oldest in the world.

While on this island, ensure that you watch the sun set over its golden beaches while sipping mint tea. It is also the perfect ending to any day.

This lesser-known gem in the Gulf of Guinea consists of two main islands with an abundance of natural beauty. With secluded beaches, volcanic peaks, and lush rainforests, it is ideal for travelers looking to escape crowds.

São Tomé Island offers black sand beaches. Yes, black sand! It always feels like one has discovered a secret world when experiencing these black sands. On the other hand, Príncipe Island is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, boasting incredible biodiversity.

Sipping on local coffee while watching sea turtles’ nest under a starlit sky is a favorite activity of many tourists, and I recommend that you try it on your next visit.

Comoros

The Comoros Islands are nestled between Mozambique and Madagascar and are known for their volcanic landscapes and vibrant coral reefs. They are also known for their fragrant plantations of vanilla and ylang-ylang.

Grande Comore boasts Mount Karthala, one of the world’s largest active volcanoes, while Moheli offers a marine park teeming with marine life.
