When You Can See Cherry Blossoms in IITA Ibadan
One of the biggest questions people ask is: “Is there really cherry blossom in Nigeria?” The answer is yes, but only for a short window each year.At IITA, the cherry blossoms–like ornamental trees usually bloom during the late dry season to early rainy season, typically.
The best period to see cherry blossoms at IITA would be late February, March, and Early April. During this period, the trees produce clusters of soft pink flowers that resemble the famous Japanese sakura bloom. Cherry blossoms everywhere in the world usually bloom for only 1–2 weeks at peak, so timing matters. If you go too early, the buds haven’t opened. If you go too late, the petals may already have fallen.Personally, the best time I’ve experienced them in Ibadan is mid-March.
The trees are fully pink, the weather is warm but not extremely hot, and the entire place feels incredibly peaceful.I still remember one visit when I walked under a row of blooming trees and the petals were slowly falling with the breeze. During my walk, I saw several colorful butterflies, birds flying across the canopy, and massive tropical trees that looked centuries old. What I love most about the forest walk is that it feels educational and calming at the same time. Cycling around IITA might be one of the most underrated activities in Ibadan. The campus is huge, with wide roads surrounded by tall trees. When you ride a bicycle through those roads, it feels like you’re exploring a nature park. Bike rentals are usually available, and the experience is surprisingly affordable.
I remember riding past long stretches of palm trees and flowering plants while the breeze hit my face. It felt freeing in a way that city cycling never does. Cycling is perfect if you want to explore the campus faster, enjoy outdoor exercise, or love scenic landscapes. Honestly, it’s one of the most relaxing bike rides I’ve ever taken.
Birdwatching
If you enjoy wildlife, birdwatching at IITA is incredible. The reserve hosts around 200 bird species, making it a paradise for bird lovers. Even if you’re not a serious birdwatcher, you’ll notice birds everywhere.
