Best experiences in Africa to know

South Africa

Climbing the Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania

From a little age, I have always heard about Mount Kilimanjaro – the highest mountain in Africa and I was always fascinated by it. Standing at 19,341 feet, Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest peak and one of the Seven Summits.

Climbing this dormant volcano is an unparalleled experience that takes you through five distinct ecosystems—from tropical rainforest to alpine desert. The view from Uhuru Peak, the highest point, is an extraordinary reward for any adventurer.

When you visit this place, ensure that you take along a camera so you can capture all the views!

Exploring the Pyramids of Giza, Egypt

What’s a trip to Egypt without exploring the pyramids? I know we have all heard stories about the mummies of Egypt. But, why not experience these pyramids for yourself?

The pyramids of Giza are one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and they are a must-see. These pyramids were built over 4,500 years ago and stand as a testament to ancient Egyptian civilization and engineering prowess.

Every time I think about these I am always in awe as there are different aspects to hold my fascination. This is your cue to explore the interiors and marvel at the mystery of how these structures were created.

Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda or Uganda

For wildlife enthusiasts, gorilla trekking in the misty rainforests of Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park or Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is an unforgettable experience. There is always a certain thrill with coming face-to-face with a family of endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.

Are you up for it???

Visiting Victoria Falls – Zambia/Zimbabwe

Victoria Falls is one of the largest and most magnificent waterfalls in the world, and is a spectacle to behold. The powerful rush of water creates a mist that can be seen from miles away, giving the falls the local name “Mosi-oa-Tunya” or “The Smoke That Thunders.”

When visiting Victoria Falls, I would recommend that you go for activities like bungee jumping, zip-lining, and white-water rafting that are available nearby. You are sure to have a swell time!

Hot Air Balloon Ride – Namibia

What do you think about riding a hot air balloon over the Namibia’s Namib Desert? I have thought about it so much, and it is on my bucket list for my visit to Namibia.

Interestingly, the Namib Desert is the oldest desert in the world. It offers surreal landscapes of towering sand dunes, vast salt pans, and desert-adapted wildlife.

A hot air balloon ride over this majestic expanse allows you to experience the serene beauty of the desert from a bird’s-eye view, particularly at sunrise.

Tracking The Big Five in Kruger National Park – South Africa

If you ever find yourself in South Africa, I recommend that you experience the Kruger National Park as it is one of Africa’s largest game reserves. If you haven’t guessed already, you can see the ‘Big Fives’ at this park.

I like that this park is a safe space for these animals and we get to experience them in their natural habitat. It is also home to over 500 bird species.

Experiencing the Great Rift Valley – Kenya

Have you seen flamingos before? If you haven’t, going to the great rift valley gives you the perfect opportunity to do so.

My favorite thing about this place is the scenery! Dare I say, it is one of the best in Africa, and you cannot help but capture the experiences.

This place is home to diverse ecosystems, including lakes like Lake Nakuru and Lake Naivasha. Here, you would see flamingos, hippos, and other wildlife. Additionally, bird watching and hiking are top activities to do at this place.

Exploring Yankari National Park – Nigeria

The Yankari National Park is one of Nigeria’s most important wildlife reserves and home to animals like elephants, buffaloes, hippos, and various bird species. It is also home to the Wikki Warm Springs.

I love this place because you get to experience wildlife while also enjoying tranquility. Sometimes, you may not feel like leaving this place when you visit it. It is a must-see destination for nature lovers.

Visiting the Rock Churches of Lalibela – Ethiopia

Lalibela is famous for its 12th-century rock-hewn churches, which were carved directly into the ground as a representation of a “New Jerusalem.” These UNESCO World Heritage sites are sight for the eyes as they depict architectural wonders.

Interestingly, they still stand as active places of worship even in the present day. So if you visit these churches, you also get to learn about Ethiopia’s deep Christain heritage.

Visiting the Markets of Marrakech – Morocco

One reason why people love to visit Morocco is because of the beautiful and bustling markets of Marakkech. These markets are filled with colorful textiles, spices, jewelry and ceramics.

Asides from the markets, the entire city also stands as a wonder to explore. The city’s maze-like streets lead you to palaces, mosques, and gardens, while the aromas of street food invite you to taste the flavors of Moroccan cuisine.

This place should surely be on your list of places to visit!

Marrakesh Market, Morroco

Stargazing in the Kalahari Desert – Botswana

Although I have never been to Botswana, I have heard so much about the Kalahari Desert, and it is one of the top places on my bucket list. The most fascinating thing about this place to me is that the desert is free of light pollution. This makes it the perfect spot for stargazing.

While in Botswana, you can also visit the Central Kalahari Game Reserve to see wildlife like lions, elephants, and cheetahs.

Walking with the Maasai – Kenya/Tanzania

The Maasai people are one of Africa’s most famous and culturally distinct ethnic groups. A visit to their villages in Kenya or Tanzania allows you to learn about their traditional way of life, including their pastoralist heritage and iconic beadwork.

You will enjoy the fact that these people are very friendly and always ready to welcome foreigners into their space. Some tours offer the opportunity to go on a guided walk with Maasai warriors, learning about local wildlife and survival techniques.

Witnessing the Festival of the Sahara – Tunisia

I always tell people that one of the best ways to explore any African city is to witness their festivals. If you are ever in Tunisia, you need to experience the festival of the sahara in Douz.

It is an annual celebration of nomadic culture, and visitors can experience traditional music, dancing, and camel racing, as well as witness artisans showcasing their crafts. The festival brings together desert tribes and international visitors, offering an authentic cultural exchange in the heart of the Sahara.

Visiting the Island of Goree – Senegal

This island is a UNESCO World Heritage site and was a major center of the Atlantic slave trade. When you visit this island, you can tour the Houses of Slaves museum to learn more about what went down in those times.

The island’s cobbled streets, colonial architecture, and museums also make it a culturally rich destination.

Diving with Whale Sharks – Mozambique

This one is for adventure seekers who are very daring. Mozambique’s coastline is renowned for its vibrant marine life, particularly the opportunity to swim and snorkel with whale sharks, the world’s largest fish. These gentle giants migrate through the waters near Tofo Beach, offering a unique, serene underwater experience. It’s a must-do for marine enthusiasts
