Is this a welcome development? Of course, yes. The queue to get enrolled plus that to update records can drive any sane person crazy. This is especially true now that everything is intertwined. 

CBN recently insisted that your NIN be provided for banking in Nigeria. So, you need to ensure your NIN data matches with your account details. This is because the regulatory body may instruct your bank to freeze your account for non-compliance. So, this is very welcome.

DIY step by step guide to update NIN (National identification number) online.

The below step by step guide will enable you update your personal information online. Whether your name, date of birth, residential address etc. With this new process, Nigerians living in Nigeria or in the diaspora can easily update their details online by providing the requested documentation.

Hence, no more queues at the NIMC office just to update your information. Plus, you get to save transport fare or fuel by doing this on the internet.

To use the NIMC short code, the following must be in place.

  • Your mobile number must be the same as that provided during registration.
  • The modification is subject to verification and approval by NIMC
  • A service fee may apply

Steps using short code

  • Dial the short code on your registered mobile number- *346#
  • Select NIN Modification
  • Enter NIN (11-digit NIN)
  • Verify NIN
  • Select Modification option (Name, date of birth, address, email address etc)
  • Enter the new details to update
  • Confirm changes
  • Receive Confirmation code
  • Confirm modification
  • Receive confirmation that the update has been effected

Steps using NIMC website

  • Log on to selfservicemodification.nimc.gov.ng to register and login, input NIN, verify NIN with face match
  • Click on the required data to be modified e.g. Date of birth
  • Input your national population commission Certificate (NPC) number
  • Upload the NPC certificate
  • Await approval or notification that details have been updated.

  2. How much will NIMC charge me for update? A service fee of 500naira per field. However, for date of birth update, you will pay a non-refundable fee of 15,000naira. All fees have to be paid before update will be processed.
